Unfortunately it is true. I think more than 10 years ago someone in /K also showed a video from FB i think. One of the road side stalls was melting transparent straws into a large wok of fresh oil. Then does the frying. The reason is to keep the oil cleaner. Which is does because flour binds with plastic better than fully liquid oil. It is not fake news. It is just something people discovered accidentally.
