Every time I cross over from Singapore to JB I feel JB is very run down. The JB sentral area is very overcrowded and chaotic. Traffic is a mess. Many other parts of JB are run down, many malls are dying or died, the buildings around are frequently run down, traffic is always bad at the city center. The newer places are quite nice but then the older parts are left to rot and not maintained. For such a large city, the public transport system is terrible, the bus are frequently in bad shape, no proper public bus terminal, just overall horrible.

I compare with other cities in Malaysia, KL, Penang, Ipoh, Melaka. I think they are in better shape than JB. JB just gives me that dark, gloomy, broken down, shady kind of feel. It seems like I'm stepping into Gotham city sometimes.

Is JB the worst city in Malaysia or did I miss out on another city in Malaysia which is worse?

Drive from Spore to JB and you see the difference. Walk across the causeway and you can feel the difference.

But not all is bad la. The night clubs and entertainment is JB is cheaper and ‘wilder’ than Spore la.

JB is boring, but definitely not the shittiest. You still have Kelantan Perlis Terengganu at the bottom pack.

JB has been mini Hatyai since the 90’s. And now can be mini Hatyai and Shenzen/Dongguan as well. 😬😬😬😬😬😬

Remember the late LKY once said JB is a dangerous/gangster city? How that statement created the hoohaa in JB and Malaysia. But still not as bad as Batam la. In Batam, if you go ulu area, can see them brandishing guns openly.

I agree. For a so called big city, no comprehensive public transportation. The soon to be completed RTS won’t solve anything. Where’s the metro system for JB? ART mana? Any plan for MRT/LRT?

The JB now doesnt seem much different than 10 yrs ago when I work there.

Is a city that the people needs to have own transportation.

Is a city with planning for the riches not the masses.

Is a city the is unsafe and no one going to make it better.

Dont know about shittiest but, JB city is a poorly planned city.

Actually, as a city, it is very small. Basically it is sandwiched between two unmovable stuff, the railroad and the palace. It cant grow beyond it naturally. So you end up with a lot of taman outside of the city proper.

Outside of the city proper, up to the diamater of 4 km on map, basically the buildings there are also very olds, basically, from the 70s and 80s. So the entire city is 50 years but without the benefit of development.

You want big development? need to ask majlis and also the biggest dog in the city first. not easy leh to grow that city.

thats why i didnt hesitate to move back to JB from KL last time.

Sure, in KL, you got more malls and places to run to, but it become muak after a few times.

What matter where you stay or visit is the people and culture.

KL valley people is most sophisticated compared to the rest. So there is a lot of happening there e.g. events.

Next on this level is actually Penang ppl. Then only Greater Johor area ppl. But even Greater Johor ppl now got so many ppl outstation too.

JB and Johor as a whole, I think got one thing that win all other City, there are less religious extremist there, if got any, the law deals with them pretty fast. Then all those religious pensyarah if they want to give ceramah in any religous places, their topic and content must be vet thru by the respective religious council. If batu api,,,will be dealt with.

As for infrastructure, I think JB and Johor has been neglect by the Mahathir administration and then other Umno lead administration, only in recent 10 years where we start to see proper planning from competent people and lead by our Sultan.

*
I wonder which died down malls this dungu going to, when you got other options like paradigm/southkey, etc.

Are you saying as long Johore benefits from this agreement, Malaysia doesnt need to adjust the pricing ?

but hor the rakyat malaysia time to time kena water repricing but singapore as foreigner country doesnt to, wow ????

With that silly pricing, federal should just fund the water treatment ourself and sell it to DC is much more profitable.

Being next to SG is good enuf for JB to be better than others. With RTS & JSSEZ it can only get better n better. The coming decades will belong to JB n it will attract people from other states. Many hardworking people became millionaire by just working in SG. It is not easy to redevelop the old city centre but Iskandar Puteri is turning out well.

JB Center is bad due to the road works. Will get worst before it gets better.

Too many run down buildings, cannot tear down due to legal ownership unless gov force take over.

Maybe in a next 2-3 years will have improvement but for now is probably as bad as it gets.

Since so many millionaires u see they r willing to SPEND, esp eating out. U will see many Alphard n MPV around. Many new property launching >1 million r snapped up within days if not hours. Some land prices have multiplied within the last couple of years esp after data centre getting hot. Pity those who can't cope with d higher cost of living.

Museums = ada. But I dont see it as some places you will go repeatly.

Parks = nature parks are not as good as the klang valley. They are a few for recreations but nothing special. Forest city beach is not different from desaru except you wont dare to jump into sea by Forest CIty beach. You might like those place like the blue lake but it is for photo purpose usually you go. Unless you enjoy the walk across forest.

JB is a messy and poorly planned city. The city also feels like it caters to Singaporeans more than Malaysians.

JB is just SG worker quarters
*
Statement Meaning
"JB is just SG worker quarters" Johor Bahru feels like a place mainly for people who work in Singapore
SG = Singapore Refers to people working across the causeway
Worker quarters = dorm or home Suggests JB is where workers live/rest, not a city for its own sake
Why people live in JB Lower cost of living, cheaper rent and housing
Daily cross-border commute Many travel from JB to SG every day for work
Tone of statement Slightly sarcastic or critical
