QUOTE(farscope @ May 1 2025, 08:44 PM) If I ever go, would choose train up and down.but the view from the plane would be alot more awesome. Do not want to have to land in the highlands where the air is thin though. that is the most sketchy part of the flight. so maybe you are right, take the flight back. **** once again also sketchy... since the plane is fully loaded and need to take off where the air is thin. |

QUOTE(skywardsword @ May 1 2025, 09:29 PM) If I ever go, would choose train up and down. lemme remind you, train from ChengDu to Lhasa is circa 36 hours, and 46 hours from Beijing, on soft (and thin) sleeper bed, passing through some of the highest terrains above 5,000m where air is even thinner than Lhasa's airport which is around 3,500m only. You may wanna think twice of train up and train down.. hahabut the view from the plane would be alot more awesome. Or at least partially high speed. 36 sounds long...was in train from new Orleans to Chicago....like 1-2 days...was quite uncomfortable.Definitely need to get own cabin if like that. How do they handle altitude sickness...in trains that is a question... |

I measured it using waze when nothing to do in the train lol.Definitely need to get own cabin if like that. How do they handle altitude sickness...in trains that is a question... the best cabin you can get is soft sleeper cabin that sleeps 4. i.e. 2 double deckers. you will need to sleep with strangers, and during my time, i was with 2 very kind tibetan elder ladies and a vietnamese solo tourist. they will switch train at xining station to change to oxygen supply train. but that being said, oxygen is not supplied automatically in the cabin. Rather, they have oxygen outlet beside your bed, similar to hospitals, and if you need any assistance, you gotta ask the staff to provide you the oxygen hose and ventilator. my SpO2 level dropped down to 60% during the most extreme cases (at kekexili plauteau and tanggula mountain range > 5,300m) with severe headache and lost of breathe but i survived lol. view is awesome after your cross tsinghai plateau. and depending on the time of your train, you will see different view. but most of the time you will see snow capped mountain, vast grass land, countless mountain tunnel passes and occasionally wild animals. You probably were at 90% but already start to be confused. Lucky you have kind Tibetan elders... they help you? they probably made an effort to pair Tibetans/highlanders with normal folks....so they can render aid.the best cabin you can get is soft sleeper cabin that sleeps 4. i.e. 2 double deckers. you will need to sleep with strangers, and during my time, i was with 2 very kind tibetan elder ladies and a vietnamese solo tourist. they will switch train at xining station to change to oxygen supply train. but that being said, oxygen is not supplied automatically in the cabin. Maybe in future, they have pressurized train cabins. Anyhow, thanks for sharing the info!!! luv it! |

Anyhow, thanks for sharing the info!!! luv it! the pairing wasn't intentional because other cabins are mostly foreigners. Locals usually choose the cheaper hard bed or sitting option. the cabin is slightly pressurized though, hence the conductor advised us not to be over excited when we step out of the train. skywardsword liked this post
