Older generation mid life Gen Y millennials yes. They attended SK schools back then when China was still Communist closed up country.

Back then even upto mid 200x, China just recently emerged from slumber. Where got people speak Mandarin so widely like today. Depending on which city in Malaysia they only learn how to speak Chinese through casual conversation with family and friends.

Got still bank officers/manyzers I met before only spoke Hokkien to me when I tried engaging conversation with them in Mandarin.

It is normal for millennials, Gen-X and boomers in this country including the Chinese diaspora in SG, Australia and even USA.

Many successful CEOs also like that can only speak in dialects which is used in the place where they grew up and English.

That's why the Gen-Z and younger generations is a lost generation and disconnect from older Malaysians.

They attended SJKC schools and brainwashed fully by the system to obey CCP without thinking twice.

Older generations Gen-Y and before, still divided to fully trust CCP unless they also came from SJKC. The SK ones are more indebted to Western system because they were brought up by Western education system which lasted through universities in US, Europe, Australia etc.

You can also notice that older Singaporeans and Malaysians also not entirely pro China. They stand firm with their identities and are more confident themselves that if they obey entirely soon they'll be replaced by the Mainland Chinese themselves due to the advantage of being fully fluent in Mandarin.

What the Mainland Chinese cannot compete in is they're the same with the bananas when it comes to other languages.

So glorify Mandarin is also to submitting to them that you're inferior.

Cursing in Cantonese is much more fun than mandarin

If recall correctly, LKY once said that a normal person can only master 2 languages at most properly in their entire lifetime.

Back before 2010, most Malaysian Type-Cs attended SK schools the 2 languages which already occupied their learning was BM and English.You can still learn a 3rd language but the command usually will be weak.

That is why we have cases where BM teachers were complaining in SJKC schools that their Malay language command was weak. It's no surprise.

SG education system avoided that by requiring the 2 languages which students must take as compulsory subjects are

1. Your own Mother Tongue 2. English as International most used language.

You can opt for 3rd language if you want and is optional.

Able to speak Cantonese and not Mandarin is keeping more to the roots than the other way around.
You can learn Mandarin from school but those who speak Cantonese means they communicate in their mother tongue better with their older family members.

Mandarin is important with the rising China influence across the world today but still in a globalized community you can survive with English in almost every country out there even in non native countries such as Japan, Korea, Europe easily with broken English.

Unless you plan to become translator for the Mainland Chinese people. To them even if you're fluent in Mandarin you'll still be considered 2nd class and inferior to their national system as foreign born Chinese. Just as how Malay people impression on Nons even if they can speak fluent Malay it'll always be a non mother tongue language for Nons.

then cantonese speakers are the ones keeping to their roots, not mandarin speakers

Where Malaysia SK education system failed compared to SG education system is that BM was compulsory forced on Nons even when it wasn't their mother tongue.

So the 2 main languages slots that most normal person can master had already been taken up by BM and English.
The other hidden reason is to give an added advantage to be better than the rest because it is their mother tongue language.

SG instead went by mother tongue requirement which retained the advantage of each race while making English the main language for all daily interactions.

That is why they're better positioned to be a globalized nation that does trading/businesses efficiently.

Cantonese is their mother tongue not mandarin

Actually it got nothing to do with speaking mandarin or dialects.

The phrase banana - yellow outside, white inside - was coined by the older generation who attended English medium schools from primary till secondary school.

They were the generation who were really fluent in English. I doubt TS know the meaning of 'roots' when saying people lost their roots if can't speak Mandarin.

Being a banana actually means Chinese in blood, but having a western outlook. And please understand the meaning of "outlook". It is not when you wear. It is your thoughts.

Outlook = "a person's point of view or general attitude to life."

Because of their English education, they do think somewhat differently from those who attended Chinese schools. This is mainly due to their reading materials - mostly if not all were from the western world.

I for one can be deemed a banana. I still have my roots and culture, following all the festivities and traditional rituals. But when it comes to political thoughts, financial security and well being, and general outlook, I do think and hold opinions a bit differently.
