MIRI: A 64-year-old e-hailing driver from Miri has turned heads after raking in over RM10,000 in a single month through the Maxim platform — proof that age is no barrier to financial success in the gig economy.

Mohd Nasir Yong, a local born and bred in the city, achieved the remarkable milestone in March this year after committing to full-time driving with Maxim, an e-hailing service operating across Malaysia.

A mualaf who converted more than three decades ago after marrying a Muslim partner, Mohd Nasir initially took up driving part-time after retiring at 62.

Having passed on his business to his child, he found retirement too quiet for his liking.

“I was restless at home. A friend introduced me to Maxim, and it gave me purpose again — plus, it’s flexible and low-stress.”

Since joining the platform earlier this year, he has gradually increased his driving hours.

His daily routine now spans eight to nine hours, with breaks between peak periods.

He credits his success to starting early, maintaining a disciplined routine, and purchasing shifts through the Maxim platform.

“Being an early bird gives me energy. Morning riders are cheerful, and it feels good to help them get to work or school.”

One of the key factors behind his five-figure success lies in Maxim’s shift purchase option. By buying 24-hour shifts for the entire month, he was able to earn commission-free for all rides completed during that time.

“The shift model allowed me to maximise my earnings. But beyond that, it is about mindset and consistency.

“Every trip counts. Every smile from a passenger means something. And with focus and perseverance, it adds up.”

Maxim Malaysia, launched in 2019, has grown rapidly and now operates in all states. The platform continues to attract drivers with its flexibility, incentives, and high-demand coverage. Features like ride bonuses and surge pricing help partner-drivers optimise their income.

Mohd Nasir said the experience has been more than just financial.

“It keeps me active, connected to my community, and proud that I can still contribute.”

His story has since inspired others to consider e-hailing as a viable option — especially retirees looking for a purposeful way to stay engaged and earn at the same time.

“If I can do it, anyone can. Keep pushing, plan smart, and drive forward — literally and figuratively.”
