PETALING JAYA: German auto supplier Continental has announced it will discontinue its tyre manufacturing at its plant in Alor Setar by the end of the year.

The decision follows an extensive business review focussed on enhancing the company’s competitiveness and overall performance in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Adapting to changing customer demand, the company seeks to optimise its local product portfolio and its manufacturing footprint,” it said in a statement today.

According to Continental, the Kedah facility, which produces tyres for cars, small lorries and motorcycles, employs 950 workers.

“The company’s priority is to support its employees by providing assistance and support, such as career counselling as well as exploring potential employment opportunities inside and outside of Continental,” it said.

Despite the closure, Continental said it remains committed to its customers and partners in Malaysia as it is a key market within the Asia-Pacific region.

It added that the Alor Setar plant had been part of the company since 2012, though it originally began operations in 1979.

The facility spans 133,000 sq m and has been an integral part of the company’s operations in Malaysia.

Since they're closing down anyway... PAS gomen can at least go ask them donate 500 tyres that failed to meet production standard but still usable, probably lying in their warehouse .

This can help at least 100 buses in their aim to carry 5000 retrenched workers all the way to Selangor to find new jobs.

dont asyik serbu mom and pops saloons and shops saman short pants and skirt staff/customers.

Imagine you are a 50yo guy working in that plant for 30 years.

Suddenly close down, where you gonna go?

Work too long in tire plant, retrain also no one else want to hire.

but ah well, 30 years at least got some retrenchment benefit

We are so fucuked. Instead of good quality Malaysia made Conti tyres everyone have to use China made linglong. Those tyres are proven to be worse in all tests. Loss of jobs, loss of quality, loss of safety.

Replacement brands from China, Vietnam and Thailand offer on average an unbeatable 60% price advantage over branded tyres.

No need to be a rocket scientist to know which brand many Msian choose to buy!

Many Rakyat are stretched. They’re feeling inflation everywhere: groceries, loans & makan.
Supporting locally made products becomes a luxury that most ppl can’t afford—even if they want to.

This isn’t just Msian problem— it's the same all over the world.

u have to weight of the cost of everything, which one u wanna save

they setup factory here is because of the rubber's source
the raw material they can get it straight here and it's high quality

if they were to move to china, the savings much be so much that they're willing to ship the rubber all the way there

I once retrenched a guy at age 57yo.

He worked 30 years and got paid 700k.

We had no choice but to give him, because we were closing a branch in Sarawak.

If we had transferred him to peninsular, he would have done constructive dismissal and do labor dispute with co.

We had no choice.

Yes still up and running for now.
In the world of business nothing is permanent and one would be bodo to assume it is. Faham?

FYI Continental tyres manufacturing in PJ still up and running.
So how? U bodo like me also?

The move will see Continental, which serves replacement customers and original equipment customers alike, left with one manufacturing facility in Petaling Jaya.

I had worst experience with this brand, specifically the UC6, for wet traction while my buddies the same for MC6. Definitely skip this junk brand if priorities the wet traction

Well most employers would have went with the transfer option and hope their employees will quit by themselves though.

But good for you parting ways on good terms here.

This can help at least 100 buses in their aim to carry 5000 retrenched workers all the way to Selangor to find new jobs.

they setup factory here is because of the rubber's source
the raw material they can get it straight here and it's high quality

if they were to move to china, the savings much be so much that they're willing to ship the rubber all the way there

Last check, China now produces more rubber than Malaysia.

Thailand labour cost is cheaper than Malaysia, plus Malaysia rubber production has been declining every year, big plantation company in Malaysia reluctant to plant rubber because it is higher labour intensive than oil palm.

So it is feasible for them to tutup and move to thailand.

Its a lot more easy to symphatizes with people working under factory condition than an aircond one

It also got something to do with how shitty Starbucks treat employee, making their layoffs seems godsends and a wake up call to their reforms

early days we have Sime Tires AS, DMIB PJ (Sime Tires Group also)

Goodyear and then Silverstone

then both Sime Tires and DMIB acquired by Continental..

Goodyear remained until closing down and Silverstone bought by Toyo Tires

so now i think left Conti PJ and Toyo Tires in Kamunting

when Toyo Tires bought over Silverstone, they also set up new plant near to the Silverstone and they closed down Silverstone plant and concentrate to the

new Toyo plant

Thats why some people says support local brand. Than some ignorant people will say “oh we consumer we vote with our wallet”. Outsider will come here take our money, give jobs when policies favours them. When times are bad, they leave Malaysia like a mistress will leave you when you are broke.

Malaysian employers will always be here. Kuli jobs is here, high post jobs also here.

They are shifting production to Thailand. Minimum wages in Thailand is thb 350 per day, it doesn't make sense to have production here.

consumer tyres , is a low tech product now . No innovation for decades already.

whats the difference between every-day year 1995 tyre tech with tyre tech in 2025? duno.

replacement duration for wear and tear all sama saja. Noise, stability, smoothness , all same same nia.
