While commonly referred to as "rare," these elements are not actually rare in terms of abundance, but they are less concentrated and harder to extract in concentrated ore deposits, leading to their "rarity"

Thanks captain obvious. This has been the number 1 talking point whenever any western media talks about rare earth. Anyone can dig the ground. The challenge is refining it. rolleyes.gif As if anyone can just rub dirt on their electronics and tada, critical mineral parts inserted

Finally, Trump managed to rekindle the animal spirit of USA's manufacturing prowess.

And USA finally goes big into recycling.

If recycling them made economic sense for the US it would've been implemented already.

Having refining techniques is not enough. The rare earth must also presence in big enough quantity to ensure commercial viability.

Having to resort to recycling route to get rare earth material already shown US can’t get it in more convenient and abundant way.

Got news say US want to try underwater mining for rare earths.

Yeap. In the name of security.

Like how SG will recycle waste water or desalinate salt water.
Despite getting a lot of water from MY.

Necessity is the mother of all invention
This pull up their rare earth will pull red flag to all western company

They won't rely on any material monopolize by other countries anymore. I bet we would see new advance mining method invented

The challenge is not refining lah. It's dealing with the waste. That's why America happily let china destroy their land to get cheap rare earths. Same goes for Australia with lynas.

Sure got stock enough for years / decades one lah, at least for military use. Commercial use will probably see supply issues.

Plenty of rare earth in northern Vietnam. They may become a big player in the future. Depends on whether tongsan kacau them.

Depend on what they gonna use their own expensive rare earth to produce, if it’s just consumer products, high price tag will not be commercially viable. If use for their weapons production, paid by tax money and overseas macai then ok lah.

In the end, Trump still shoot himself in the foot. So far US gain nothing but self harm from his stupid trade war.

Actually recycling is good. It’s just not commercially viable because price too low all this while. Recycling is far better for the environment than mining raw minerals.
Now because gold price so high recycling electronics for the gold also got market

All the while this kind of recycling is done by super poor country, where the ppl exposed to many dangerous waste. Poor country ppl has been collecting valuable materials from disposed computer and electronics for decades.

tables turned...US now a recycling plant

I presume every washing machine sent for recycling is replaced by a new washing machine, no? If so, what is the net excess that can be redirected for other purposes? Unless you are swapping washing machines for cars.

The so called "rare" earth is also highly polluting to mine. And it's so rare that Malaysia is sitting on 1 trillion worth of rare earth potential lmao. China banning exports to US will benefit us

that because only those countries can recycle them at a profit when prices for recycled scrap were lower than mining new gold, copper and rare earth from e-waste. now with tariff and shortage, it become viable to recycle them using amdk standards.

It is definitely possible but it is not the cheapest nor most efficient option.

Mainly a desperate containment action

When prolong trade war -- decoupling and 2 different spheres of influence bound to shape up

steel and copper all can recycle, just not very profitable but if the main purpose is to get at the rare earth, than the steel and copper windings are basically free recycle material, and you have enviromental benefit of not having to mine new mineral or smelting raw iron ore. only the plastic cant be recycled.

People really need to read more into details.

Seems like a lot of commentator just read the headline of a report, and think they are genius can solve a complicated problem.

of the seven materials China is restricting – samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium – only dysprosium is commonly found in hard drives.

obviously china's ban is targeting the US defense industry . the US defense industry will be in deep shit in a few months.
