when I read reddit, I see their people (mostly from US) choose friends and life partners base on either leftist or rightist political view.

You can't simply fit into left/right in this way. Even the left/right definition in US is different from UK. seriosekitt3h liked this post

This example cannot be applied for Malaysia. Republicans are known as conservatives but you drop them in Malaysia they become progressives. It is all relative to their opponents. We have many signs of being left leaning. Protectionism ....we love to protect our industries, religion, special rights, class rights. Division of wealth ...gov trying to tax or exclude subsidies from T20. M40 and redistribute wealth to B40, special discounts to certain class. collectivism ....oh we love this, race , religion.... silic0sis liked this post

There is none
There are populist, conservative, reformist, socialist, regional, religious and centrist only. Mix and mash or pick any. |

There are no left or right here. Just the ones in power and the ones who are not in Malaysia. Our politician's policies can go from populist to conservative to religious to socialism in a matter of seconds if it helps them garner votes. carloz28 liked this post

My formula for malaysians is simple: If it only affects other people, malaysians are right-wing conservatives. If it affects them, they become left-wing liberals.
It's like you can be the most anti-DEI guy ever, but then also support malaysia ratifying ICERD. |

We don't have an equivalent.
In US, both sides are actually liberals. The leftist progressives are modern liberals and the right wing conservatives are basically classical liberals. The left wing believes in equality of outcome, so things like quota systems (DEI) where let's say the country is 50:50 women and men, then you should hire 50:50 women and men in fire departments for example. The right wing believes in equality of opportunity, so the idea of merit, you hire based on who is best for the job. The left wing believes in welfare systems to help the poor, so generally they have high tax which they use to redistribute to the poor. The right wing believes in creating jobs for the poor, so generally they cut taxes so companies have more money so they can hire more people. The chart is not even correct. Historically both left and right practice protectionism, often with the right being more aggressive about it.
As for Malaysia, we don’t even know left or right. Cannot walk straight also. That’s why we are part of the so called “Non Aligned Movement”, because we tada alignment. Our alignment and balancing hapus long time ago already. This post has been edited by dev/numb: Apr 24 2025, 11:52 AM |
