Despite the controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling and her degrading comments towards the transgender community, the Harry Potter franchise is about to get a brand new TV adaptation on HBO. Although the Fantastic Beasts films got canceled midway, fans are hoping for the best with the Harry Potter reboot. But amid excitement, Rowling seems to be allegedly planning to sue Warner Bros. over casting.
After Warner Bros. opened auditions for the TV series, to all races, ethnicities, and gender identities, J.K. Rowling reportedly decided to sue the company over the lack of faithful adaptation of the cast. Meanwhile, as Rowling’s alleged fight over diversity row intensifies with many fans supporting her move, one character needs to be addressed, who cannot be race-swapped as she is Black.
Following the success and popularity of the original Harry Potter films, fans have always welcomed the idea of enjoying a far more detailed and authentic representation of the characters in an extensive form of film or series. Now, after decades since the conclusion of the last Harry Potter film in 2011, Warner Bros. revealed their plans for a Harry Potter reboot, in the form of a television series.
With the hope to transfer the magic from J.K. Rowling‘s books to the TV screen with utmost authenticity, Warner Bros started auditioning for the characters. This time, instead of limiting themselves to the residents of the UK and Ireland, producers have committed themselves to an “inclusive, diverse casting”. Thus opening the doors to all races, ethnicities, as well as gender identities, WB hoped for positivity (via Variety).
However, as the buzz starts to build around the highly anticipated Harry Potter TV reboot, tensions start rising simultaneously, between J.K. Rowling and the studio over the casting choices. Rumor has it that the author of the beloved novels has dusted off her wand and is preparing to take legal action against Warner Bros. for not sticking closely to her original vision (via Reddit).
With the casting calls open to all races and identities, it seems like J.K. Rowling’s dreams of a perfectly preserved, British wizarding world are set to go up in flames like a poorly executed spell. Therefore, the author made headlines for reportedly planning on suing Warner Bros. for not choosing a cast “more traditional and faithful to the original work”.
Although there has been no confirmation whatsoever, about the casting controversy and J.K. Rowling’s alleged fallout with Warner Bros., some fans have started supporting the author over the necessity of maintaining the authentic representation of characters. Instead of race and gender-swapping roles, fans are rallying behind Rowling for taking a stand against this woke trend in Hollywood.
But hold on, for there’s a bigger twist awaiting fans in the war of race-swapped characters and casting controversy. Apparently, while J.K. Rowling has been allegedly advocating against a diverse cast in the Harry Potter reboot, she had previously given a nod to the idea of a Black Hermione Granger, with the casting of Noma Dumezweni in the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
While Noma Dumezweni’s casting had sparked controversy with many fans arguing that Hermione should be white, the author had openly supported the two-time Olivier Award-winning actress. Saying that Hermione’s skin was never specified in the novels, Rowling noted that she “loves black Hermione”. After all, the character is beyond her skin color and more than just a witch with bushy hair and a knack for spells—she’s a symbol of intellect and determination that transcends appearances.
Of course, J.K. Rowling’s tweet about Black Hermione hasn’t stopped fans from conjuring a whirlwind of opinions, but it is surely enough to prepare fans for a Black Hermione Granger on screen if Warner Bros. decides on it. Therefore, while Rowling and Warner Bros. might have their differences regarding a diverse cast, they surely won’t mind offering the role of the brainy Gryffindor witch to a Black actress.
