The Tonelab LE would be a good choice, as it has a decent amount of effects, but great amp modelling. If you're looking for something with more effects to play with but with decent amp modelling, then maybe you can try out the Line6 Floor POD (or the POD XT Live if you have the budget).
Yes, effects can help, but if you have a crappy amp to start with, it needs alot of pedals to coax out a good tone....... easiest solution is to buy something with an amp modeller.
Even if you're using the house's amps, you'll never know what quality you're going to get, which is why alot of them use multi-fx units anyway (unless you're a MAJOR headliner where they will provide you with top of the line Marshalls or Mesa)..... Heck, even the guitarist from Deja Voodoo Spells uses a POD during the clinics I've seen him in.
That's just my 2 cents btw..... the decision is entirely up to you. Yes, individual pedals COULD sound better, but you'll be shelling out quite a bit if you're an FX junkie. Even that, it all depends on the amp. For me? I use a combination of both. Use my Tonelab LE mostly for the amp modelling and chorus effects, while depending on my MXR Overdrive and Wah + my Digitech Whammy as my effects.
And don't worry Gapnap. I see nothing wrong with your posts AT THE MOMENT
