Im currently on a 12600k, is it better to change to the ultra series and platform or upgrade to 14900k?

If its the latter, whats the pricing like?

Motherboard is very expensive. I would suggest 14900K. Unless your current board is cheap cut cost hardware.

must be intel? if not then consider AMD instead
14900K's LG 1700 is a dead platform. next time want upgrade means change mobo altogether.

Ultra 285K is an unfortunate regression. yes more efficient than 14900K but 9950X/9950X3D are way more efficient than 285K. gaming wise 14900K is unfortunately better than 285K. let alone the X3Ds.

do u do mostly gaming? or got other CPU-focused productivity such as using premiere pro and davinci?

if mostly gaming then just slap a 9800X3D since u were asking top of the line CPUs. get a CPU + mobo bundle because single CPU retail kena scalped by local distributors.

I see, I'm on a b660m ddr4 version. What's a good ballpark figure for the 14900k?

PC mainly for gaming but only on 1080p. Thought about the am5 platform but if can im trying to minimize the cost as much as possible. Would you reckon the 14900k is good for at least the next 5 years?

Which B660M? Very unlikely that board is comfortable running 14900K due to VRM not good enough. 12600K is also a decent CPU. What made you want to upgrade it?

If your PC is gaming only, I would suggest saving up for AMD setup.

mostly gaming + 1080p defo 9800X3D le. like at present, this will be the best combo for u.

9800X3D on AM5 platform no need to go too high end. 14900K though it does need a better mobo because it eats a lot of power and WILL BE UNSTABLE if gt power fluctuation at lower end mobos. this means 14900K will pair better with z790 mobos.
9800X3D on the other hand can pair with B650. because mid to high end B650s are already very good + 9800X3D eats way less power and runs less warmer than 14900K, and a good lead over 14900K on gaming at 1080p.

I would argue using 9800X3D + B650 will cost u lesser in the long run. this is because
1. u have better upgrade path until 2027. say AMD releases next gen CPU, maybe a 10800X3D and u wanna swap to that, u no need to change mobo at all
2. 14900K runs hot. it needs a good cooling solution. I'm talking about at least 360mm AIO, or at the very least, a Noctua NH-D15 G2. and a good case with good airflow.
3. 14900K used to have degradation issue, same goes to 13900K because intel didn't bother to tell mobo vendors that it CANNOT run beyond 253W so they decided to let it run for 300+W. this is not relevant to whether if it's gonna last for the next 5 years since it's been "fixed" on a later BIOS updates, but this shit happens means I also lose trust on them, particularly 13th and 14th gen.

unless u wanna bite the bullet and pray for that Ultra 385K will regain the lead. then get a 285K with maybe z890 so in the future u can swap ur 285K with 385K. but that shit also runs hot and intel never promised platform longevity...don't bite that bullet. no one knows jack shit about 385K yet.

The 12600k is starting to show signs of being slow when i use it for anything other than gaming. Occasionally i use the PC for excels so got sangkut2 sikit lah.

What exactly is the model of your mobo? Since its Bseries why get Ksku CPU? Your not gonna use its potential for OCing so kinda waste of money. However depending on whats your mobo (and how strong its VRMS) you can still upgrade to 14900 nonK (its nearly similar to its Ksku just only lower 200MHZ turbo, barely will affect performance).

If you feel lag with a 12600k, that is not your CPU fault for sure. That thing is plenty fast for excel.
It has to be something else , SSD , ran out of RAM or thermal throttling, mobo VRM overheating. Maybe its your OS or your pc kena virus.

When you upgrade your rig , especially a whole new platform ,it is highly recommended that you format your whole OS or you might be leaving some performance untapped.

Dont just upgrade for the sake of upgrade. In the end you might just be wasting money but achieve nothing.

Those are likely to be BIOS related problems and AMD pretty much fixed those issues quite early, and on their other hand the Intel degradation issue is a very well documented hardware problem and the way how Intel 'fixed' the issue isn't exactly confidence inspiring either

Usage? If you are only gaming, neither of these are good choices - ARL is terrible for gaming due to its very high latency and requiring very expensive memory, and the latter is plagued is degradation issues which we have no idea on its long term reliability despite all the fixes by Intel
Realistically I'd probably recommend you go for a 7800X3D/9800X3D if you can afford

9950X3D died is not a fix as well.

The OP PC is relatively new, spending nearly RM 5k on a whole new setup wont give a significant difference in usage. Thats just waste of money, a CPU upgrade will be more cost effective.

Largely an ASRock/BIOS related problem, and unless there is major coverage by well known tech media like Gamers Nexus/HWUnboxed that actually proves there is a major hardware fault I'd look at it as a relatively isolated problem

Yes, but without any mention of use case it will be hard to recommend anything

100+ documented cases on 9800X3D and now spills into 9950X3D is not isolated in my opinion.
