just went to lowyat and i saw laptop with NPU processor

not sure how is this different from GPU , but they said it can run LLM locally? is that true?

if anyone bought one can kindly post review ?

Yes, it's true! Laptops with an **NPU (Neural Processing Unit)** are designed to accelerate AI workloads, including running **LLMs (Large Language Models) locally**.

### **How is an NPU different from a GPU?**
Both **NPU** and **GPU** can accelerate AI tasks, but they are optimized for different things:
1. **GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)**
- Designed for **parallel processing**, great for graphics rendering and AI training.
- High power consumption, but excellent for high-performance deep learning tasks.
- Often used in **gaming, video editing, and machine learning (ML) training**.

2. **NPU (Neural Processing Unit)**
- Specifically designed for **AI workloads**, optimized for **efficiency** rather than raw power.
- Low power consumption, making it **ideal for battery-powered devices** like laptops and phones.
- Handles AI tasks like **speech recognition, image processing, and LLM inference** efficiently.

### **Can an NPU run LLMs locally?**
Yes, but **with limitations**. NPUs are optimized for **small to medium-sized models**, like:
- **Gemini Nano** (Google Pixel AI models)
- **Llama 2 (7B or smaller)**
- **Mistral 7B**

For **larger models** (like GPT-4 or Llama 65B), you'd still need a powerful **GPU or cloud computing**.

### **Which Laptops Have NPUs?**
- **Intel Core Ultra (Meteor Lake)** – Comes with an integrated NPU.
- **AMD Ryzen 8040 series** – Includes an **AI Engine (XDNA NPU)**.
- **Apple M1/M2/M3 chips** – Have built-in NPUs (Neural Engine).
- **Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite** – AI-focused laptop chip.

If you're interested in running **local AI models**, an NPU-powered laptop **can handle smaller models efficiently**, but for **big AI workloads**, a high-end GPU is still better.

can run LLM locally? he means light learning machine ah.. the LLM we means its large learning machine wo.. n currenly NPU ONY LUNAR LAKE (intel 200V) are truly capable for running solo .. intel 200u and amd ryzen treat us as genuine pigs only

It's basically just something to advertise wow new feature you should upgrade

now yes, in theory it could run AI tasks

but software that supports it is still extremely limited

If you wish to run stuff like DeepSeek AI on your PC locally, it can be done but you need a LOT of RAM, also it is not the full fat version, it is a "distilled" version that is less

I would say it's like, cool gimick you can mess around with but not yet enough for everyday use, maybe need to wait a few more generations...

I haven't personally tried one, but from what I understand, an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) is specifically designed to speed up AI tasks, like running LLMs locally, compared to a regular GPU which is more general-purpose. It's optimized for deep learning and other AI workloads. So yeah, it should be able to run LLMs locally, but how well depends on the specific hardware. If anyone's used it, I’d love to hear how it performs in real-world scenarios too!

Nowadays even Fon snapdragon can achieve 80 TOPS but laptops NPU still stuck at around 45 TOPS, why like this ?

Depend of what kind of processor or GPU was equipped with your pc/laptop, now day Core Ultra Series 2 and AMD AI 3XX Series combination iGPU with NPU can achieve up to Overall Peak TOPS (Int8) of 99 TOPS, combine with NVIDIA RTX GPU can archive more than 1000 TOPS.

Been thinking about the Acer Swift 16AI with Intel 258 CPU, currently at RM 5199 at Shopee, I wonder if Acer quality still sucks like last time or already improvement?

I not sure as i never brought acer laptiop since my last acer laptop is Acer Aspire 471G long time ago, now i normally using M4 Macbook as my main laptop for work and Alienware X17 R2 and illegear Selenite Pro for gaming, recently brought new Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 with Core Ultra 9 275HX with RTX 5090 after sell out my Alienware X17 R2 and illegear Selenite Pro as it design especially Anime Vision, easy access bottom cover and full RGB was kinda attractive me

Bro is the M4 MacBook better than Windows machine ? Been thinking about the M4 MacBook too but it doesn't have OLED. The Acer Swift 16 AI looks very attractive but I just worry about Acer quality cos I used to own 3 Acer before, 1 okay 2 KO, really it's a gamble to buy Acer. There's a Acer shop nearby my workplace but their price is RRP not discounts voucher like Shopee.

basically i use Macbook for work such as video editing use final cut, as for other such as gaming or AutoCad and Sketchup design i still got multiple laptop setup such as Alienware X17 R2, Illegear Selenite Pro TGL and my newly brought at the end of april this year Asus Strix Scar 18 2025. About OLED you mention i will pass as from my point of view and usage as yes basically OLED was the best in term of viewing such esspecially true dark ratio but not suitable for me as i always had my laptop on with screen on even laptop was leave idle when i working or play games, use laptop with OLED will probably cause permanently burn mark on screen base on my usage for sure

NPU based laptop such as Intel Core Ultra Series 1 0r 2 or Ryzen AI series will get Microsoft Studio Effects on Windows 11 which extended and enhanced the functionality of Laptop main camera such as background effect, eye contact, automatic framing etc. which not available on non NPU laptop
