I'm beginner here. Should I choose Nikon D40 or Canon EOS 350D? So confused! What's the biggest different between these 2?

Let me add to your confusion. Olympus E-410/E-510, Pentax K10D Super and Sony A100.

Touch all these cameras first before asking for others' opinions. Sure will get biased feedbacks especially from Nikon and Canon users.

That should be quiet extensive to answer. You'll have to narrow the answer down a little.

I need no others, I just wanna compare between Nikon D40 and Canon EOS 350D.. If you were me, which one you'll choose and why? :s

simple,
if you shoot more on landscape and portraits, you might wanna consider the nikon because of its colors.

if you shoot more on sports and night photography, you might wanna consider the canon because of its razor sharp images across the isos.

its all about your style of photography.

one thing you might wanna take note abt the d40 is that not all of the lenses can autofocus on this body especially the older ones. only new ones with built in motor can autofocus.

You should choose the one you feel most comfortable using. Once you get it, don't look back.

check out dpreviews.com and stevesdigicams.com for reviews of both camera.

what do you expect from your camera?

do you had plans to upgrade and expand later on?

or you want most bang for your bucks (but lack upgradibility)?

I used 400D. It's versatile but looking at other people pics in flickr, I like the colors from Nikon.

Color management can always be handled using an editing software. I use 350D, and I'm loving it.

actually it all depends on the photographer la.
i myself want to depend less on these softwares to have a little more challenge.

i'll choose 350D over d40 as i wanna have large range of lenses to choose from, old to new, all AF equipped... lalala~

Well I'll choose the 350D because I believe that D80 is the "at least get this" for Nikon


But why not save up a little more to get the new 400D instead?

Well, for me, I would go for Nikon D40. Just like the vivid colours so much and its jpeg output quality is very satisfactory to most ppl, thus saving a lot of time not having to post processing all of the pics taken. Next is the bigger LCD on D40 and finally the robust build of the camera body that feels so good. Just my 2 cents!

d40 is pns with interchangeable lens. and lens is limited. not all nikon lens can use. please stay away from d40.

This is one of the factor why I will not choose the d40 too.

well...I'm personally is a D40 user..the reason i choose this cam is bcuz i like Nikon's image colour and metering, canon one is isn't far off the pace too, just that u have to photoshop to get ur more desired colours....lens wise--if u r just starting, i think u might just wanna start off with a kit lens and a 55-200mm VR for the D40, and a flash perhaps...for 350d, u can start to get many kinds of lens, the plus point for 350d..

canon has better ISO performance than the D40...
body built up---D40 is tougher,350D nt bad also...

although i haven't own one yet. I was doing some research on d40 previously, while the lens issue doesn't seem that big at all as there are more than enough AF-s and AF-I lens to cover the needs of beginner like us.

However, D40's main weakness is the 3 point AF. Correct me I were, isn't 3-point a little bit too little?

yeah, feature wise also very bad. that's why i said its just prosumer PnS with interchangeable lens

my advise..go to the shop ur self then try both camera with ur own bare hands .. u decide it ..

i use 350D. you can look at my gallery, i don't do post processing other than resize + sharpen. occasionally some minor contrast / brightness adjustment.

Let me know which one you've decided with. I'm thinking of going into the same direction .. Nikon D40 or Canon 400D .. My friend who've been playing with DSLR for quite sometime suggested me to go for the Canon 400D. Let me know which one you choose and why ..

This might be a little off topic but you should take a look at k100D super.
Sometime it happens, deciding between A and B suddenly C came along and C the winner!

Actually he's right..Iwas like u before choosing between these 2 ..I love the colors of nikon , vivid and bright but i also like the AF points of 350d and my answer is the k100d super

A dslr full featured under 2k

11 AF points...very fast AF compared to 350d
6 megapixel but very strong ISO performance ..ISO3200.
IN body stabilizer- can buy good lenses and have vibration reduction with any lenses..no need to buy IS lenses anymore.

Dust removal - like 400D...

Can use supersonic lenses..which means can upgrade to higher end lens.

Light like D40 but better built with a stainless steel chassis than 350d....

Try one before u guy ...

oh yeah it have a top lcd display and a 2 inch LCD screen ..350d have only 1 inch plus screen..and colors are not that vivid. Lens are very very expensive and its kit lens is the worst amongst dslr kit lens.

anyways, i still prefer canon. *picks up the 350D again*

if u want dual screen but smaller LCD go for 350D,(feel pro).
if you want larger screen but 1 screen only go for D40(a bit laggy).

350D is better in term of noise control

but the noise control create loss of detail

well at least mention la it's a Pentax.

anyway i did consider the k100D before.

the only things I didn't like were

1. 6mp (my S7000 already 6mp.)
2. uses AA battery (arggh i hate using AA batteries)
3. doesn't use CF card (damn, cannot use / borrow CFs)
4. harder to find used lenses compared to C and N BUT it's not a problem getting lenses for them, almost any camera shops can order the lens for you.

why did I consider it in the first place? onboard IS. Just like how i also considered the A100 from Sony.

in the end 350D - because someone was selling it cheap. that time K100D / A100 used unit no where to be found.

i've tried pentax before and it was a great cam i must say .. color more natural and high ISO intelligent control ..

Then any planning of switching camp to *ist side?

You could ask at the k100D super discussion thread. Maybe they'll ask you to go with group shots... This month's DCM have a review on K100D Super.

Any Good camera will do if you shoot in RAW

but still, choose your camera wisely.

haha... rad is true... i also did think of getting D40 or 350D, in the end getting 350D, because of wide range lens, and also.... if u go browse through rad's deviant art or.. google "lim wan xiong" ( previous 350D user ) for his deviant art (couleur).. u'll be amazed what a 350D can do.... so everytime i cant shoot good pictures, i look at their account, i wont blame the camera, i blame myself.. ^^

another difference will be, D40 is made of magnesium alloy where else 350D is plastic ( feels toyish ).. so it depends on ur own.. feel them... play with them... see which one u prefer..
