Best Place to Exchange Coins/Shillings? Need Advice!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been keeping a heavy stash of coins for years, and today I suddenly thought—maybe it’s time to exchange them for cash. Where would be the best place to do this? Here are some options I’m considering:

1. Kopitiam – Do they usually accept coin exchanges?

2. Banks – Are there any fees or restrictions?

3. Shops that need coins – Do businesses like convenience stores or supermarkets accept large amounts of coins?

4. Others – Any other good places I should check?

I’d really appreciate your advice on the most convenient and hassle-free way to exchange my coins. Thanks in advance!

Most kopitiams, mamaks will still appreciate you paying in coins say RM3-5 each time although their need has reduced with the prevalence of eWallets

Use some paper to roll twenty coins into cylindrical shape and mark them. Then take them with you whenever you go out.

Banks you trust that has a Coin Deposit Machine. Can google for location.

Why I say trust? Cos got 1 bank that a few of my relatives used that consistently shortchange the amount they deposit
(they roughly pre-counted the coins before passing it over at the bank, always get told the amount to be RM50-100 lesser than they initially counted).

Anecdotal, but 1 is an accident, 2 is a coincidence, 3+ is a pattern.

Edit: To answer your question, no fees that I know of.

If you got Maybank account then you can go to selected Maybank branch for coin deposit into your account, not all of the Maybank branch has the coin machine to deposit.

You prepare your bag of coins and give it to the staff, the machine will sort and count it, then the staff will give you the paper how much is it and usually max 1-2 days will deposit in your account. Mine was less than RM100 worth of coins and it entered within a day.

The last time I went to Maybank main branch at PJ two years ago they said they only accept small amount of coins because machine got some problem, not sure about right now, you can always give a call to make sure before you go.

Target kampung baru kopitiam. Lots of old folks so they still need coins.

How much do you have? If less than RM500, that's not a lot.
