KFC Turkey Shuts All 537 Outlets Amid Bankruptcy and Gaza Boycott Fallout

İş Gıda, operator of KFC and Pizza Hut in Turkey, declares bankruptcy, closing 537 outlets amid $214M debt and Gaza-related boycotts. 7,000 jobs lost.

The franchise termination will affect 283 KFC and 254 Pizza Hut restaurants in Turkey, which are expected to close “at least temporarily”.

The US company is working to reopen as many restaurants as possible.

Yum! Brands alleged that the recent sales in the Turkish restaurants were “significantly below the global average sales per restaurant for each brand”.

As a result, the loss of royalties from the store closures will have no material impact on Yum!’s core operating profit in 2025 and beyond, it said, expecting no impact from this termination on other markets.

Yum! Brands, the owner of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, previously had a franchise agreement with İş Gıda A.Ş. to operate KFC restaurants in Turkey. However, Yum! Brands terminated the agreement in January 2025, leading to the bankruptcy of İş Gıda and the closure of all KFC restaurants in Turkey.

Explanation

Yum! Brands cited "failure to meet operational and quality standards" as the reason for the termination.

However, some reports suggest that a boycott related to the war in Gaza may have also contributed to the closure.
İş Gıda had aggressively expanded the number of KFC restaurants in Turkey after securing the franchise rights in 2020.
The company relied heavily on debt, and rising interest rates and liquidity problems led to its financial collapse.
İş Gıda declared bankruptcy in February 2025, with debts of 7.7 billion Turkish lira. icon_idea.gif

The company employed over 7,000 workers, whose wages and benefits went unpaid following the declaration. rclxms.gif
