Johor Bahru family fraud group mixed real and fake watches and defrauded 35 million. The main culprit Chen Hao and his relatives were arrested**
(Johor Bahru News) The Johor State Police yesterday dismantled a family-style fraud group across multiple states, and the 35-year-old main culprit Chen Hao was arrested. Since 2022, the gang has sold Rolex, Patek Philippe and other famous watches in a "mixed sale of real and fake" mode, defrauding more than 35 million ringgit in two years, and was finally intercepted by the police on the eve of attempting to abscond with the money to Thailand.
According to Datuk Seri Ramli, Director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department of Bukit Aman, Chen Hao's parents, wife and brother-in-law are all members of the fraud gang, a rare family of fraudsters. After the 2022 epidemic, they colluded with Chinese imitation watch factories, mixed high-imitation watches with real watch inventory, and live-streamed "special auctions" on social media to attract collectors. His father was responsible for forging Swiss original certificates, his sister used the beauty salon POS machine to launder money, and his wife and brother-in-law pretended to be luxury appraisers to lure buyers.
"They even rented a five-star hotel to hold a VIP private exhibition, and used real watches to pass the test before switching them for shipment." Nanli pointed out that the police seized 217 imitation watches (98% simulation), 46 forged customs documents and 22 mobile phones used in the raid, and froze 14 bank accounts and 3 properties involved in the case.
Johor Chief Police Chief Kumar revealed that the group adopted the "family kidnapping" model to operate - the tuition fees and family medical expenses of the members' children were all withdrawn from the proceeds of the fraud. The main culprit Chen Hao even transferred RM28 million of stolen money to overseas wallets on the pretext of investing in Bitcoin.
The president of the Malaysian Watch and Clock Merchants Association, Du Wenjie, denounced that this case severely damaged the reputation of the industry, and the rhetoric such as "fake watch chips can pass the counter verification" caused panic among consumers. The six people involved in the case have been charged under Article 420 of the Criminal Law for fraud, with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The case will be heard in the Johor High Court in August.
