Hi, bought an old subsale house which is about 20 years old. Those days when the house was built in year 2000's, that time no Unifi fibre stuff, only have Streamyx copper.

I think the previous owners had installed Unifi fibre at least, around year 2010 onwards. Not sure how they installed the fibre, have not looked into detail of the house yet, but I think the usual pull in the fibre from outside la.

Now it's year 2025, I need fast and stable internet, at least 300Mbps preferably. TIME internet is available in my housing area and I would like to choose TIME. But Unifi also can, I will check out the price comparison.

But importantly is, if possible, I would like Ethernet in downstairs living room, downstairs guest room, upstairs both the rooms (for children to study/laptop).

At my current childhood home where I'm staying now which I grew up in, only the living room have Ethernet (common la, only one main PC at living room ma haha). Then if want to use laptop in kitchen or upstairs, always have to use WiFi only and Wifi not fast enough or stable enough for me, somemmore high ping when want to play online game.

Is it possible to have wired Ethernet connection in so many rooms i.e. downstairs living room, downstairs guest room, upstairs both the rooms?

If possible I don't want to rely on Wifi, but if no choice I have to use Mesh Wifi is it?

Thanks all, hope can advise, this is my first property, so am new to all this electrical/wiring stuff

If you want wired internet in every room, you have to run ethernet cable to every room from the router. If not enough ports then you could add a switch. What's the issue here?

Looks good, i will check out the full video later. Is it a one-time payment? Not sure if there's extra monthly charges.

Anyone here personally using these Fibre-to-the-room things?

Dunno boss, in my old parent's house, I only ever had one desktop computer in the living room which was connected directly to Ethernet. All other devices like laptops and smart TV's all used WiFi. Because living room/the hall, was where the router/modem was, together with the landline telephone. Until now it's the same setup, i'm still living with them.

My dad doesn't like wires all over the walls/ceilings. Even when we had to install UniFi fibre in our old house which only had Streamyx copper at that time, he had some hesitation as he doubted whether the contractor will do a good job of drilling the hole, hacking the tiles and pulling in the fibre wire (which is a random guy from TM and not someone my dad trusted such as his long-time contractor).

If let's say I want wired internet in every room next time without going for TIME's fibre-to-the-home type , i will have to do all this long wirings and pull from living room/hall all the way upstairs? Sounds tedious, or maybe because i have no experience in this yet. Do you DIY it yourself or ask contractor/the TM/TIME technician to do it?

If u going to renovate, especially/specifically re-do whole house wiring, u can just ask wireman to pull ethernet wiring for u too.

TM/TIME contractor wont entertain becoz too much work and they cant possible do hidden (inside wall) wiring unless u dont mind them using casing running along the wall.

+1 vote for pulling ethernet cable.

1. Cable type - Cat 5e should be good enough (up to 1 Gbps speed). Cat 6 speed is up to 10 Gbps speed (internet speed won't be that fast)

2. Wifi Speed - do a test first before doing the ethernet installation. Plug in where your Access Point will be in the house, then walk around the house with your phone to check the Wifi strength. Older houses have thicker bricks, hence wifi speed will be different for upstairs / back of the house, etc

3. Ethernet location- You might not need to install an ethernet point for all rooms. Just need to have a repeater (upstairs common area) + AP in main area (near modem)

4. # of Ethernet points - If you are putting an ethernet point at the upstairs common area, put 2 points. This is for contingency if the point is damaged (then have a backup ethernet point)

Ask CCTV installer to pull the LAN cables.

One more thing to think about is where your "rack" will be. The place to put your network switch + modem. Some people add a CCTV NVR and NAS into the same rack so they could share a UPS as well.

old house right?, perform one renovation hack for network cabling.

this one LAN cable goes to middle of second floor. (connection with main unit router/modem/wifi,) attach it with 2nd mesh. then this mesh support high speed wifi coverage your entire second floor.

Your issue is that you think it is tedious, or it is hard work, or a contractor won't do the job properly, or which contractor to find, or your dad doesn't like exposed wires. Figure out what you want to do first. And if you still want a wired network, you have to run wires. No other way about this.

Yes, you can put Ethernet to every rooms and smart TV. You just need to get contractors to lay the cables and buy Ethernet switches.

There are various ways to do it. You can have all cables going to the incoming. If you do so, you would need a larger switch and the cabling could be complicated. Bigger cable trunk is needed for all these Ethernet cables. It would be costing to embed this big trunk into the wall. Trouble shooting is also not easy.

For me, my incoming is located at living room. There I have a 8-port swith and this covers all my requirements at the ground floor. Then, I have one Ethernet cable from ground floors going to upstair. Over there I have another 8-port switch, which serves rooms, workbench and CCTV.

There are two types of switches, one is PoE, which is able to supply low voltage to PoE WiFi ethernet socket. My whole house is equipped with these PoE WiFi ethernet sockets. Can use cable for notebook and use WIFI for mobile devices. These sockets are standard 86mm type and can be next to the power sockets in the room.
