Personally using Steam Deck and wouldn't use anything without Steam OS, but the Steam Deck hardware is getting dated now, would wait for a successor or anything else that is running Steam OS

Steamdeck oled or rog ally x is the most obvious choice.
Vanilla rog ally battery is poor.

I personally feel the steamdeck and ally x is on the larger end of handhelds.

There are other cheaper / more compact handhelds. But they won’t run steam games natively.
Namely the odin 2 portal and Retroid pocket 5.


I personally got the regular ally and Retroid pocket 5.
Ally to play steam and gamepass games.
Retroid to stream from consoles/pc and emulate games up to ps2.

the new z2 extreme is still using rdna 3.5. Will be a long time until we get rdna 4 on handheld. Which is pretty sad since rdna 4 supports the nice ai fsr

can run wukong, even the new monster hunter wilds, indiana jones etc. But it will need to run on aggressive upscaling or 720p for heavy games.

for me, at home lie down i throw my spare part 3080ti on an acrylic case and just park it under my bed. display i use a portable oled monitor . its dumb af but i get 60fps max out settings that steam deck can only dream about.

you can use moonlight or parsec to stream games from the desktop pc to your windows handheld. You can even set it up over the internet and play outside by using mobile data too with latency of course

i was considering handheld too previously, then i realized most of the modern games require internet connectivity.......long haul flights with limited WiFi really bored to the max...

you can play games offline on steam and xbox app games (i haven't tried other game store apps about offline permission)

On steam just start the game you wanna play while steam is online, when the game go into main menu, close the game. Then under the steam too left tab click "go offline". You can then play the game without any internet connection.

For xbox app games (i use xbox game pass games), just go xbox app settings and enable "offline permission". You can only do this on one device per xbox/microsoft account iinm (max 3 offline device changes per year). Then do the same like steam, launch into in game menu then quit the game. Then you can play that game offline, do it in every game you intend to play offline. There no "go offline" mode like steam for xbox app.


Of course this is for singleplayer games / mode, not online multiplayer mode.

I have the ROG AllyX. Oblivion remastered can run without any problem but on lower res. If you don't mind about the batt. power, then you can bump the res. up a bit.
I can even get Doom Dark Age to run on AllyX. But the performance is not great. I would recommend to wait for AMD HX370 or HX375.
