Trying to see if I can get some advise on a predicament I am facing at work right now.

Currently working in a team of 4 people including the boss.. since Jan 2025, I have been supporting this one colleague from a different location who is on long term medical leave. She is only slated to return in March 2025 although not confirmed yet. Boss asked me to assist I said okay

Now she is asking me to also cover for another staff who will be going on one week raya leave during quarter close which is a busy financial period.. so basically I will be doing her task on top of my work and it’s gonna be crazy week.

I just feel this is become too much and I’m being misused like this? Last year for Deepavali I couldn’t go on leave since nobody to back me up but now suddenly I need to back ppl up? Totally unfair. I am planning to tell it straight to my boss but wanna do it in a professional manner, any advise?

Throw the resignation letter.

State clearly why. Say you tired and mentally burned out. Don't forget to state all the reasons.

If the boss genuinely care about you well-being, he or she will ask you to reconsider. From here, state your terms and demands. The boss may state your weakness so state your pros to counter it.

Good luck.

You can always say "NO". No one is preventing from saying it except you.
If you can finish your work, got lots of free time and dont mind doing more then go for it.
If you can't finish your work and you still need to assist others, at the end of the day your boss will only blame you for not finishing it because you didn't "NO" and accepted the task.

Lastly tell your boss your work takes pririoty, if you got time and can assist you will do. If you can't don't blame me for not finishing their work.

never say yes anyhow. but reject it smart lah.

in these case, just say that you might not be able to cope with everything and don't expect a job well-done if insisted to do so.

then u can just do it at your own pace.

in my current company, there's a lot of emphasize on empowerment. you have the right to decide what's best for you, but the full accountability is on yourself.

Professional way is to write down what is on your plate right now and then show your boss, ask him which one to prioritize. Tell him you have limited capacity and can only finish some, not all, and put the ball back to his court to help you manage. That's the whole point of having a manager.

If you're a manager position then your job is to help your underling to manage this. If they can't manage means it's your job to get more resource to help distribute the workload, which is where the "manager" position comes in.

Your boss/manager doesn't always know what you're doing.

If other people can take long leave for festive season, why you can't do it?

A lot of my chinese colleagues took 1 week leave during recent CNY holiday

true story, most bosses don't know how to do the financial closing.

The manager just wait for the team to close, then she do reporting and analysis.

Some bosses don't bother to learn or understand what their staffs are doing.

I won't advise to say NO. Tell ur boss your current situation, inform him too many workload as you only focus priorities, and might delay on other work progress.
