Looking for a cheap phone, but must be long lasting. Currently using a Xiaomi phone which has been with me for 4 years, previously got screen issue after the 3 years mark, now almost dead, constant freezing every hour or so.

What other brands are both cheap and long lasting? Should I stay with Xiaomi, or move to other brands?

Among Vivo, Oppo and Honor, which one the most long lasting? Never used any of them before.

If it is cheap...it won't be long-lasting.

You should be prepared to invest around RM2k to RM2.5k for a mid-range smartphone.

Otherwise...if lower than that it is not worth it.

I suggest Honor.

2k? I was only planning to go for something less than 1k, 1k may be my max budget.

I don't really care about specs, just cheap and long lasting, is that too much to ask for?

Yea, thought of Samsung too, but family used Samsung before, both low end and high end Samsung, and spoiled pretty fast, not sure their way of usage though.

Meanwhile my faithful redmi note 10 pro from early 2021 is still working normally. only had to change new battery at xiaomi repair centre last year.

but all the same it pays to be informed and prepared just in case...have shortlisted the redmi note 14 (non pro) which should be quite ok for my simple needs and light usage.

Yea, before the current one, previously I also had another Xiaomi, lasted for 5 years, and was still good, I only changed because that time wanted a newer phone. But their quality seems pretty inconsistent, since my current Xiaomi got spoiled pretty fast.

Cannot go wrong with honor. Was and still a Xiaomi user. Not anymore after my current phone. Just waiting for it to die.

I seen my mother using honor phone, so long still ok. I think 4y+ and no bloatware Vs Xiaomi.

I would avoid Color OS hence maybe Oppo is out straightaway.

Personally I think you cant just look at branding when buying phones. Specify what you need then decide on a shortlist of phones. Some phones prioritize performance for gaming, sucks on camera. Generally I think gaming phone felt a bit flimsy, plasticky but the performance advantage is real and it does not feel laggy over the years. Phones that generally sucks after few years are those that focus on camera and aesthetics because it uses a mediocre SoC that would be too slow after a few years. Choose anything between 1500-2000 (at least) if you have a low budget and you want a snappy phone that would last for 4-5 years.

I think he means its long lasting because of how cheap it is.

Like let say you buy RM800 phone. You don't expect it last long.

On the other hand. Iphone cost how much? Of course to iphone user, 5 years isn't consider long, because they paid so much.

For me personally, I only buy up to RM1500 android phones. So I expect my phone to last 2 - 3 years.

My RM1500 Honor phone now already 4 years, now going to be 5 years. You consider that is long lasting or not?

Best Overall Longevity: Honor, particularly for its efficient software, durable hardware, and consistent updates.

Best Mid-Range Option: Oppo and Vivo are comparable but may not last as long as Honor devices in terms of performance and updates.

For the most durable option, focus on mid-range or flagship models from these brands.

Honor is very good almost like huawei phone.

But I encountered some problem transferring my WhatsApp chat history.

The thing with Xiaomi is the lacklustre software updates and sometimes new firmware sold old problem but intro new bugs.

The hardware is solid, bit the software always have minor bugs and updates are not very consistent.

*
Hardware may last a long time, but software support is another key consideration nowadays. Most brands commit 4 or 5 years software support/upgrade for their newest flagship models, not sure if they provide the same service level for their mid and low ends models.

If you plan to use the phone for apps that needs latest security or OS version, then software support is even more critical. There are still many working phone around with Android 9 or Android 10 OS (but no longer with software support) but a lots of banking apps already requires Android 11 and above to work, then the phone become useless to support your needs.

For Honor, let's say Jan security update when will it be released ? Usually how long it takes to be released ?
*
The release time of security patches may vary by region and model. Some carriers may only support bi-monthly or quarterly security updates for models that are otherwise eligible for monthly updates. Additionally, security updates are released in batches, so if you haven't received the update yet, it may still be on its way.

In general, Honor aims to provide security patches promptly, but the exact timing can depend on factors such as device model, region, and carrier.

You should be prepared to invest around RM2k to RM2.5k for a mid-range smartphone.

Otherwise...if lower than that it is not worth it.

I suggest Honor.

I seen my mother using honor phone, so long still ok. I think 4y+ and no bloatware Vs Xiaomi.

I fully agree, whole family was using xioami, lasted 1, 2 the most 3 years.
After that switched all to honor, all >3 years still running, bought a new batch of honor with more memory, now everyone carry 2 mobiles. Old ones used for banking n emails. New ones for browsing, entertainment, photos. Newer ones r x7, X8, 200lite.

First Xiaomi ever was mi3 years and years ago. Worst phone I've ever used, software updates will crash phone and change phone setting like alarm. Wake up late because of that cibai.

Then few years ago tried Poco. Nope still poor software, poor camera software optimization also. The fact that need to install gcam mod means Xiaomi don't do any camera software at all. Updates still slow like shxt, especially security updates also so slow

If reliability is what u are looking for then u have to go for Oppo. Their specs are lower but their phones are smooth and last damn long. The worst reliability is xiaomi and vivo. Honor also not bad but Oppo i can say is on par with iphone in terms of reliability. Dont waste ur time with Samsung, One of the worst reliability

It's wrong to generalize the entire brand because of the performance of a few models. To get the exact picture, kena buat survey/kajian with statistically significant respondent pool on all models.

My take:

The most replaced or broken item due to usage is the smartphone screen. It is the main cash cow for repair centres. Buy a phone with a good Gorilla Glass. There are many videos online on the Gorilla Glass. Choose the right Gorilla.

When replacing a phone's screen, go to the official service centre. OEM/Gred AAA screen would not be a original Gorilla.

Yea, thought of Samsung too, but family used Samsung before, both low end and high end Samsung, and spoiled pretty fast, not sure their way of usage though.

Bro...sorry to tell you that for less than RM1k...you cannot expect much in terms of longevity (durability) and performance.

I am (was) using several smartphones from Samsung flagship to below RM1k phone. (Xiaomi)

Tatau what kind of achievement they'll unlock by being that incel sohem sohais.

But again, its all depend on how the incel use that shit end of the day.

I also got several S23FE S24FE whatever shit, survive nicely saje? The S24Ultra and Epal also I go provide as studio and hotspot fone for client, all survive fine. Not a single green light saber or whatever so far. Either the incels all cursed with cepat mampus.exe software, or they're just bless with shit.

Better off with older flagship. Pixel series, Samsung S series, or iPhone. Since they have so long life for os updates. You get top spec component like camera and storage UFS speed. Better glass, better fingerprint scanner, better screen etc etc etc. More long lasting components.

For you rich people, say flagship is durable, how long of usage do you think that phone is durable?
Because I never use a flagship.. ever..
I cant compare this affordable phone durability to flagship durability which is better.

At least 3 years. Preferably 5 years.
My Mi8 bought in 2018. Only replaced it with Mi14 last year after 6 years of use, just because original battery replacement can no longer be found. My Mi8 was okay.

So the flagship is just slightly better then those affordable ones.

I am too have an experiance with nearly 4 year cheap phone. Redmi note 10 4g. Im not a careful user. Its Full of dent and minor cracks to the back panel. Im amaze it still wanna live.

Im replacing it because its just support up to 4g and 6gb ram. Not enough now days to be my main phone.

Now rocking Honor 200 pro. Wanna see how long this phone gonna last.

I do not subscribe to paying RM5000 for a phone that will eventually be replaced. If i split that amount to 3-5 phones, i would be spending little for each new phone that i use and dump away without any care. Even able to sell it for RM100 to anyone that wants it.

Case in point is the phones that i buy were always under RM800. I owned Redmi Note 8 and 12. My first smart phone was Redmi 1S. But that cost just over RM300.

My phones fall from hand many times. Get the screen protector scratched here and there. Phone speed is just bordering on average to slow. Storage is alright as it is expandable.

You can get light gaming out of it. Everything else just works as it should. There are no fancy stuff like NFC or 5G (today) if you keep that pricing under Snapdragon platform. You could get all those with Mediatek though.

The point is, i do not get locked down RM5000 for something that main function is communication for income. Whatsap/ calls/ internet browser capable is all there is to it.

From factory, there is alot of ads in the OS.
Need to manually disable them . Take abit of time.
That is how xiaomi and anything related to them initial experience is.
You can make a xiaomi device that doesn't have any advertisement.

Most ppl expect out of the box no-ads experience.
But for me , the price is cheap so i can live with it

Came original clear one with phone. Never bought another one even with the current Redmi 12. The Redmi Note 8 had to replace the case and the ori screen protector when i gave it to my aunt because it is breaking apart and scratched. Else the phone is still good.
