Hi guys, would like to get feedback and advise on my situation.

Recently i found a used car that i really liked on FB. Test drove it, and brought the car to a mechanic, everything seems ok so i proceeded to gave the seller a deposit of 2.5k.

then, few days ago, i had a family gathering and told my story to my relatives where 2 of the uncles who is a used car dealer gave advise to do SCRUT test before finalizing it.

lo and behold, found out that the report is very very suspicious where a lot of N/A on the fields. they guess that the seller just recently changed the car plate no, which is true considering the car plate no format. they said it's a major red flags. the VIN report also all returns N/A for the fields.

Uncles suggest me dont buy cus maybe the car got issue d, maybe banjir or accident, or repo, etc

my fault is that i thought my homework to buy used car is finished once i brought to a mechanic. didn't knew that SCRUT can be so important.

I then proceeded to call the seller the next day that i would like to cancel the deal, but mentioned that i have money issues instead, but the seller kept pressing to proceed with the balance as he has done the PUSPAKOM and thumbprint, used all of the 2.5k, and mentioning that i promised the seller to buy the car, etc etc.

Any advise here?

I thought data from SCRUT only available when the car was involved in some kind of accident and performed insurance claims.
*
that's why N/A as is not available is suspicious rather than yes/no. like the car has a new history or settle behind

This is the report for the car

compared to one of report my uncle did

U are giving bad advise.

OP did u sign anything?
*
didn't sign anything, all agreement is only spoken f2f, he took photo of my IC and driving license.

QUOTE(MegaCanonF @ Jan 14 2025, 02:26 PM)
No don't. 2.5k is chump change compared to a potential problematic car.

scrut is a way to see whether the car has been involved in any accidents/etc.
*
my mechanic uncle oso quoted if want to fix, prepare 5k budget to fix.

take that RM2.5k as tuition fees.
*
QUOTE(Lanchio @ Jan 14 2025, 02:58 PM)
If gut feeling not right, then don't buy.

As for the deposit, seller can forfeit it as buyer change mind. Up to his generosity if he wants to return or not.

Btw, what does your B&W deposit agreement says about refund?
*
I was prepared to forfeit the deposit. still, it pains my heart deeply.
GPT mentioned that i can bring it to small claims court as the VIN and car plate no potential misrepresentation with malicious intent. not sure it's worth the hassle or not.

there's no B&W agreement signed, only verbal agreement made. he also took a photo of my IC and driving license for him to proceed with PUSPAKOM and his thumbprint. He also mentioned that he has used up all of the 2.5k for the processing fee.

I have not transferred the balance remaining nor made my thumbprint.

Below 5k can go fight case n Small Claim Court. You got a good caaw via the scrut report discrepancy.
*
seller oso mentioned via WA bebas accident banjir. maybe can collect all evidence and fight

QUOTE(Lanchio @ Jan 14 2025, 03:32 PM)
I think runner fee + Puspakom is definitely less than 2,500
*
QUOTE(WongTheThief @ Jan 14 2025, 03:46 PM)
I don't know much about what seller needs to do but send for PUSPAKOM change of ownership only costs RM35 (after tax RM37.8) and JPJ another RM100 (100 or 200 I forgot).
*
QUOTE(hihihehe @ Jan 14 2025, 03:57 PM)
what processing fee need 2.5k lol
*
never bought a car before and didnt knew about this thing, i tot need to pay this that runner is expensive. now i know is cheaper than 2.5k

QUOTE(Icehart @ Jan 14 2025, 04:09 PM)
You did brought the car to the mechanic right? They didn't see any fault correct?
You should check with Scrut why it's N/A.
*
my uncle mechanic say nothing wrong, expected worn and torn parts for second hand car , just some sound on the below which need do replace steering rack, absorber, etc.
today called him up and told my situation, he say u shud have done more thorough home work, i can only tell u is it still can drive or not only

Is ok. Buying used car is like this.
I've had bought 3 used cars and all work out fine for me. Just buy, pump petrol and drive. No repairs even needed.
How old car is the car?
Check with Scrut their data is until when?
*
the car is manufactured at 2011.
Not sure with SCRUT, but at the end of the report there's a disclaimer mentioning "Please note that our accident and claim data is available starting from the year 2003 onwards."

First of all, just cuz no info in whatever DB does not mean its problematic.

U just need decide if yr ok to burn 2.5k or risk buying it.

I only buy used cars all over 10yrs, up to 40yr old car. Not once check in scrut or whatever.

Physical checking is yr own due diligence.
*
I had done the physical check and used checklist template online on how to buy a used car. All seems good but only 1 thing. Initially i had smell a humid, wet smell, like not fresh air smell when i go inside the car. I thought maybe this guy want to let go of his car so he didnt use the car so frequent. After story to my uncle, he say high risk the smell come from banjir car.

Getting the SCRUT report done just heighten my suspicion

QUOTE(rtk73 @ Jan 14 2025, 07:36 PM)
You can bring your uncle to check again
*
My both mechanic uncle and used car dealer uncle highly advised me to not buy d, let the 2.5k be ur tuition fee 🥲

QUOTE(mowlous @ Jan 14 2025, 07:45 PM)
You have TWO uncle on this field.... Yet you go search a car w/o  consulting them first?
*
I felt hesistant because i didn’t want to trouble my uncles who are also busy with their work d. But now my uncles said to me better call them next time when i want to buy used car again

I would just proceed and ignore the scrut report.
Buy warranty insurance if u worried. iinm its around 1K/year. ask the dealer about used car warranty insurance.

Btw have u contacted scrut why the report is N/A ?

Kinda scam if they sell report but N/A because no data or unknown?
*
I have contacted their support, but still no reply yet from CS

QUOTE(WaCKy-Angel @ Jan 14 2025, 09:04 PM)
Btw ur mechanic uncle duno how to check the car? they say dont buy because u told them about the scrut report or after they checked the car?
*
I brought the car to my uncle for inspection first, then made the deal with the seller. Then next day my other uncles told me to do SCRUT.

QUOTE(Chrix @ Jan 14 2025, 09:22 PM)
Lets not talk about "uncles" as we dont know their knowledge, or credentials, experience.

Then before the next payment, go and check the lowest parts of the interior for damness, rust, etc.

Tip: take off the floor mats, remove the plastic sill to allow access to lift up part of the main carpet just a little bit. If the baremetal is clean and devoid of ANY dust, then you contemplate if the previous owner(s) are so rajin to take out big carpet & perform baremetal cleaning  laugh.gif  or its result of alot of water washing it clean.

Thus once again, the question if u ok to burn the 2.5k or commit to any issues the car may have in your future ownership.
*
there's a rust on the pipes under the car, throughout the pipe around between the front wheels connecting to the back wheels, i thought it's just dirt or mud, or its normal as it's an old car.

EDIT: OH, another weird thing is the boot carpet is gone and the wood covering the boot is a bit warped.

QUOTE(Cookie101 @ Jan 14 2025, 09:40 PM)
If the car pass puspakom test and u like it then just proceed.

Sorry to say ur uncles or whatever potato relatives are not any better. All used car dealers tampered something. It’s whether it’s caught or not.

All u need to do is run a service check on the entire car. What brand is it? Can go to Service centre for last service information and do the service there. They will flag any inappropriate items or faults.
*
it's proton, but the seller mentioned after the warranty period, then do outside workshop d.

QUOTE(Icehart @ Jan 14 2025, 09:43 PM)
Send for inspection again lor
now so many

pay a small fee for peace of mind
dun belip all those uncle uncle
*
i thinking of making peace with the 2.5k d, dont want to deal with the seller d.

Ask scrut first why or what is NA. U already paid for the report so NA is unacceptable.

asked their support, no reply via WA yet

QUOTE(Patent @ Jan 14 2025, 09:53 PM)
Since its your dream car, maybe try for a second inspection to really check the condition.

scrut just one tool to help you decide before buying, not perfect.
proper inspection would be better.

i planning to make peace d and let go d

QUOTE(NoobHacker @ Jan 14 2025, 11:08 PM)
I kena from Otofacts, where b4 buying report it says my car is low spec, and the car im buying is mid-spec. i was so anxious that time, tot its accident car and they buy mid-spec parts to upgrade it. after buying the report, otofact say its mid-spec from the factory.

I think a mechanic should be able to tell a second hand car is ok or not, regardless of what values the scrut give u/them.

I personally trust mechanic than scrut N/A value.. unless scrut explictly say YES on certain parts. N/A means they don't have the data.

have u talk to the seller about this scrut report?
*
No, i didnt talk about the SCRUT report. I purchased another report on jomcheck, it has NO instead of the N/A, but the chassis no is not shown.

QUOTE(Optizorb @ Jan 14 2025, 11:36 PM)
also its a proton inspira right

just go proton SC with the number plate and check its service history la.. or check whether did any major bodywork repairs or not as well..

Cant believe you have 2 "uncles" who supposed to be "experienced" until simple thing like this also they never tell you..

and Scrut is not the be all end all, especially for local cars. I find their report on local cars is often lacking. Which explains why yours also show N/A. It just means they dont have any record for it, not that its a confirm red flag or whatever..
*
I think it's my fault where i didnt tell them im planning to buy a used car before, i only told them after i paid 2.5k to the seller
EDIT: OH, another weird thing is the boot carpet is gone and the wood covering the boot is a bit warped.

QUOTE(fantasy1989 @ Jan 14 2025, 11:45 PM)
i believe seller meant he spend all money already ..maybe plan to sell this car and DP for new 1
*
I think so, i saw his FB posting again to bump his listing and actually he might be a dealer instead of a owner as i saw multiple listing from him.

One thing im scared is will i get into trouble for not proceeding with the agreement even though im ok with the 2.5k gone? he said that cannot cancel, i die die need to transfer the remaining balance to him.

no la i dont think he can force u like that. 2.5k is deposit, means u ffk then u forfeit it. if he is a dealer, can try check their shop fb/google review if it helps.

i feel u should trust mechanic more than your uncle, what do they say now jomcheck says NO instead of N/A? are they really professional experienced kind or just kopitiam uncle tongue.gif

another thing u can do is check the history with proton SC with the carplate.
*
what i meant is he's a private dealer not under a company, but buy and sells multiple cars under him.

actually the used car dealer uncle bought the JomCheck report for me, he mentioned that it's still weird cus the chassis no is not there, but all of the other sample report he got has it.

He storied me he found another case that there are stolen no plate where the car plate is on 2 different cars, so he might used a copy plate.
