BWF suspends ex-shuttler Liew Daren for 1 year for betting
PETALING JAYA: Former national men’s singles shuttler Liew Daren has been suspended from taking part in any badminton-related activities for 12 months by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for betting on matches.
BWF also suspended Jerry Gan, a performance analyst with the National Sports Institute, for three months for betting on matches and failing to report it to the federation’s integrity unit.
A BWF independent hearing panel found that Daren had bet on a badminton tournament in 2021 as a “restricted participant”, which refers to either a player, coach, trainer, or staff of the BWF, among others.
He also failed to provide complete, unedited copies of his betting records to the inquiry panel, which it found to be in violation of its judicial procedures.
“Neither of these individuals appealed the independent hearing panel’s decision. The decision is therefore final,” it said.
