Replacing an electric vehicle battery costs significantly more than replacing the engine of a traditional combustion engine car. However, experts predict this could change by the decade’s end, with an EV battery replacement potentially becoming less expensive.

Recurrent, an electric vehicle consumer information provider, predicted a large EV battery pack could cost just around $5,000 by 2030. More standard models might only require about $3,375. It’s a reduction to just 30% of the battery replacement costs seen in 2020.

Industry analysts forecasted that the costs of key battery metals will decline in the coming years, potentially driving down the cost of purchasing a new EV battery.

Lower battery replacement costs could make EV ownership more accessible and significantly impact the used car market.

The average price of a used EV is around $25,000, but the prospect of adding a $20,000 battery to that total means it could be just as expensive to buy a new car altogether. As the price of replacing a battery decreases, consumers looking for a used EV may no longer have to deal with substantial future repair costs.

Over the years, most of us experienced that China produces battery do not have any quality control.

You can have very low price battery but is it a factory reject?

How often we change car engine

But we pump petrol almost every week

Time saved on charging can be used elsewhere

Replacing an engine, i never change any engine in my 20 years of driving. lulz

By the time you have to change the battery, the car is worth less than the cost to replace the battery

The idea is to remove the time at the petrol pump mostly. Charge at home, or once it gets more widespread, at your parking lot.

But overall, I guess the costs are going to be similar if not more expensive. EV feels less like a car, and more like a planned obsolescence iPhone-like-gadget. Old computer desktops can last 7 years or more, phones and tablets, 2-3 years to coincide with telco plans. ICE cars can last decades, EV cars will be lucky to get to 10 years.

I’m hoping 10 years later autonomous taxi will be reality then we don’t even need to buy new car already. Only car hobbyists will still keep and maintain their classic cars.

Grab kan ada.

If you go through the math, it may not be all that expensive to just use public transport and Grab. No maintenance, tyre changes, no need to queue at petrol station, road tax, insurance, parking, all the kaya butter toast speedsters on the roads. If you don't have kids or use your car every day for >1 hour, really can consider.
