Johor MB renews appeal for state to receive 20% tax revenue return

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has appealed to the Federal government to return 20% of the tax revenue collected to the state.

In his winding-up speech during the state assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar, Onn Hafiz stated that this request is vital to ensure comprehensive development in the state.

He then said that in line with the decree of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim the Johor state government is appealing once again to the Federal government to consider allocating at least 20% of the tax revenue collected from Johor back to the state.

He added that this is a crucial step to ensure that the people of Johor continue to benefit from the state's resources.

Onn Hafiz then said that this allocation would ensure that Johor's development can proceed more comprehensively for the well-being of both current and future generations.

In June this year, the Johor Mentri Besar made a similar request but asked for a higher percentage.

At that time, he stated that the Johor state government would like to appeal to the Federal government for at least 30% of the tax revenue collected from the state to be returned to Johor to enable better development.

If every state asks for the same thing, Johor will still remain poor because it receives a disproportionately higher amount from the federal budget as well.

What Johor gave in tax, the federal government returned two-fold from states like Penang, Sarawak.

Even if every state asking the same, Selangor, Penang, Johor and Sarawak will still be higher

"Johor provides about RM48 billion (S$13.8 billion) in tax revenue to the federal government, but only receives RM1.4 billion in return through the annual budget. How are we supposed to take care of our people? That’s why we have bad roads and poor education and health facilities,” he said"

Why not?

In the US, every state collects its own income tax and sales tax.

But for simpler implementation, Federal can collect on behalf of the states.

currently, 3% = RM$1.4 billion is returned from federal, out from the est RM$48 billion collected.

20% would be.... $9.6 billion requested...

All this while states has their own tax mechanism to collect money, so federal tax return is not the only revenue they get. So while he made it sounds like 1.4 billion is all they ever get from tax, it is not true entirely.

State tax cannot implemented here due to federal constitution restriction on collecting tax for state.

Civil servants pensions, all paid by federal government, currently it stands at 37 billion in 2025.

Civil servants salaries, all paid by federal government (unable to determine due to overlap, lets say 30 billion exclude those spent in Health care and Education). Health care and Education budget (110 billions), all paid by federal government. Interest payment for existing debts, all paid by federal government (55 billions).

After all these biggies, how much money is left for federal government to pay to each state? Total expenditure is 335 billions, and these biggest spending already cover almost 70% of it.

Maybe federal government can say subsidies for petrol remains for all, but each state can decide how much they want to take back from the subsidies, and then the savings will be given to the state government. Essentially each state decides how much petrol subsidies they want to provide, if they say no subsidies then all the subsidies money which would have been spent in that state will be given to the state. devil.gif

oil producing and tax collective are different thing bro.

Tax directly go to federal
Oil goes to GLC, which after a few trading then only federal can makan a bit
