The dangers from stingray is mostly due to the fact that their stinger is barbed and once it stung you, it's stuck on you. They have venom but it is very mild and unlikely to kill you unless you have an allergic reaction.

Now try kena sting ikan lepu, more commonly known as ikan batu. You'll be in a whole level of pain and you probably wish you die immediately rather than to endure the pain that burns your entire body for hours. I remember i got fever for several days i think after i kena stung only once when i was a teenager.
