Parking fees on Penang Island to increase 33% from March 2025

GEORGE TOWN: Parking rates in Penang will see a 33% rise in fees at designated locations on the island for Penang Smart Parking (PSP) users starting March 2025.

Under the revised rates, parking fees will increase from RM0.40 to RM0.60 for 30mins, RM0.80 to RM1.20 for an hour, and RM6 to RM9 for a full day.

The decision was approved by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) on Tuesday (Nov 26).

Council mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the fee adjustment was necessary to cover the maintenance of parking sensors and implement upgrades to improve the PSP system.

“This increase is not about generating profit.

"Our main goal is to ensure the parking system operates efficiently and continues to benefit all users.

"It also helps regulate parking durations to ensure fair access for everyone,” he said during the meeting at City Hall in Esplanade.

Rajendran added that the last parking fee revision was conducted in the 1990s.

“This adjustment is essential for us to provide better services to the public,” he said.

However, PSP users can benefit from reduced annual parking rates, which will drop from RM1,800 to RM1,200 between March and December 2025, while monthly charges will remain unchanged at RM150.

I say this is a good move... if you can afford a car you should be able to afford parking. But... there is a lack of viable public transportation alternatives though (rapidPenang bus + DRT just doesn't cut it)

My question will be how they will control offenders who don't pay for parking.

In Penang the traffic officers make their rounds quite regularly. They will also clamp the tyres of cars that double park or obstruct traffic.

Take 60 sen as 100%, 40 sen to 60 sen is 66.67% increased to 100%.
