Malaysia’s car sales and production decline in September 2024

Malaysia’s car sales and production declined further by 20 per cent in September 2024 compared to the previous month. According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). There were 58,032 units sold and registered this month. 52,922 of these units were passenger vehicles, while the remaining 5,110 were commercial vehicles.

In comparison, last year’s sales in September saw 68,174 units sold altogether and August 2024’s sales were 72,367 units. According to this data, there is a steep decline of 14.9 per cent between August and September 2024.

SHORTER MONTH, LOWER SALES

MAA attributes September’s lower sales to lesser working days for the month and an anticipation for the Malaysian government’s annual Budget 2025 announcement.

Budget 2025 was reported to have removed fuel subsidies. Luckily, the published budget showed that the government did not remove these subsidies.

According to the MalayMail, the fuel subsidies have shown to beneficial to 85 per cent of Malaysians.

Earlier this year in July, the MAA raised its total industry volume (TIV) estimates to 765,000 units from 740,000 units initially predicted. This projection is lower than Malaysia’s TIV in 2023, that saw 799,731 units sold.

With the 20 per cent dip in car sales in September, Malaysia has yet to see if it will hit its targets. Still, the MAA is optimistic that sales in October will overtake September’s.

PRODUCTION TAKES 20 PER CENT HIT

Malaysia’s production rates took a more devastating hit with a 20 per cent decrease. The volume of Malaysia’s vehicles produced also fell from 69,133 units in August to only 55,383 units in the following month.

Despite this, Malaysia sees positive news in overall vehicle production. The country’s overall number of units produced is higher than 2023’s overall units produced. January to September of 2024 has produced 593,050 units so far, an increase from 566,442 units produced in the same period in 2023.

MAA President Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain expects the country’s growing GDP to improve the local automotive industry and for manufacturers, in turn, innovate local car production. If Malaysia’s car sales and production are to benefit from this, it is yet to be seen.

“These include exciting newer and affordable models with newer features for both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and all types of electrified vehicle (EV),” he stated in an article by The Star.

Nissan to cut or transfer about 1,000 jobs in Thailand: sources

Published Fri, Nov 22, 2024

NISSAN Motor will cut or transfer about 1,000 jobs in Thailand as it shrinks production in South-east Asia, part of its recently announced global workforce reduction plan, two sources familiar with the matter said on Friday (Nov 22).

Nissan plans to partially stop production at its Thailand Plant No 1, one of two car assembly plants in the country, and consolidate the operations into Plant No 2 by September next year, according to the sources, who declined to be identified because they were not authorised to speak on the matter.

A Nissan spokesperson declined to comment on the job cuts but said the partial consolidation of the plants were underway to upgrade equipment and no plant will be closed there.

The Plant No 1 continues to operate as our major production site in Thailand,” the spokesperson said.

The struggling Japanese carmaker earlier this month announced a plan to cut 9,000 jobs worldwide after posting worse-than-expected half-year earnings. In the United States, about 6 per cent of local staff there, are leaving Nissan by the end of this year by accepting early retirement packages.

The two Thailand plants are in Samut Prakan province on the outskirts of Bangkok. At maximum, Plant 1 had a production capacity of about 220,000 units, while Plant 2 had a capacity of 150,000 units, making Thailand the biggest South-east Asian production hub for the company.

Nissan’s sales in Thailand dropped **** 30 per cent **** to about 14,000 units in the past financial year ended in March.

While Japanese automakers, also including Toyota and Honda, have dominated the Thailand market for years, Chinese makers such as BYD and Saic were emerging fast with electric vehicle options.

The two Thailand plants have also produced export-bound SUV models such as Kicks for other South-east Asian nations, and Terra for the Middle East and African markets. REUTERS

UMW (Toyota, Lexus, and Perodua), BMW, Mini, Porsche, Hyundai, Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo (only 2 branches).

It has both petrol and electric car dealerships.A clever company.

A car is a necessary item for Malaysians, unless you live in Kuala Lumpur near KTM,Monorail, LRT, or MRT areas.

I don’t think they will wait for petrol rationalization to buy a car if they truly need one.

Top 10 best-selling EVs in Malaysia for 2024
Dec 11, 2024

2024 was quite an exciting year for the Malaysian EV market as we welcomed a range of new electric cars, ranging from budget-friendly SUVs to ultra-luxurious sedans. If we look at the sales numbers, a total of 19,208 EVs have been registered so far this year, according to the data recently released by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

On comparing it with the EVs sold from January to November in 2023, we can see a whopping increase of 86%. Well, this clearly shows that Malaysians are adopting eco-friendly rides at a faster pace, helping the government to achieve its carbon neutrality aim by 2050.

In case you are looking to buy an electric car or want to know which ones are leading the charts, here we bring the top 10 best-selling EVs in Malaysia.
