Experience, skillset, intelligence etc can only get you so far if you do not have the opportunity..

Sometimes all you need is opportunity, and you can create this opportunity by expanding your network aka circle of friends..

This is from my own experience. No matter how well praised you are in the whole company, how well you performed, if your boss doesn't want to raise your salary or promote you then you are basically fucked.

Beginning from 40 years old, it is time to use both your experience and network to make money..
