My PC stopped working today. Can't turn on. At first i thought it was the PSU, but after i use a PSU tester (like the one in the video below), i think it is working as i managed to get readings from the CPU 8 pin power.

Here

Start around 2:40

However, if i plug in the GPU 6+2 pin to the 8 pin socket there, the PSU Tester doesn't even on. But if i only use the 6pin on the 6P socket, it works fine.

Meanwhile, the motherboard seems to be devoid of all response, no beeps, USB ports can't power anything.

So my guess is, the motherboard is dead....what do you all think?

If the 8-pin GPU power socket is dead / faulty, this could affect the overall 12V rail of the PSU, which could render the entire PSU inoperable.

Could that be it? Because i find it weird if i plug in 6+2, the PSU Tester doesn't lits up at all, so this is the point which i am thinking the PSU is perhaps the problem.

Getting a new 650W PSU is a cheaper option...motherboards are freaking expensive. sad.gif

Only sure fire way to know PSU is faulty is by testing it on another PC.

Only during load will you really know and not by only checking the voltage.

A bit troublesome. I do have other PCs. But they are mostly low powered mini PCs and don't have dedicated GPUs. Will it be useful? They draw very little power.

Looks like PSU about to die. Either test with another higher wattage PSU or just change a new PSU. This time get a larger watt PSU. Your electricity consumption will be the same but the PSU will be able to supply the extra power when needed.

Well u can temporary remove ur GPU and use the built in motherboard graphics to test.

Ok, i did testing by ripping off the mobo from my mini PC and stick the RTX 3060 into it.

Results:

1. No external GPU. Mini-PC rig boots successfully.

2. With RTX 3060. Can't power on. It will power on a second, then turn off, power on again one second, turn off. The fan of both CPU and GPU spins on and off as well. This keeps repeating indefinitely.

So does this means the PSU is busted especially the part where it is providing power to the GPU? In my main rig, there is absolutely no sign of anything, not even power on and off. Maybe the mobo more advanc and refused to power on due to insufficient power?

Or could it be GPU busted?? I have been playing Wukong...did Er lang killed my GPU??? shakehead.gif

I hope it's PSU busted....it's much cheaper....sweat.gif

Try booting up your main rig motherboard without GPU using the mini PC power supply.

Cannot boss....main rig 5600X, don't have iGPU....sad.gif Mini PC don't even have power supply...use external power brick. Maybe i have ancient GPU somewhere....let me check....haiz....

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

I have found my ancient HD6450 in a box, tested with mini-PC, works. Then put into my main rig...NOPE.

Then i read something on the internet....i changed my CMOS Battery (i always have a bunch of CR2032 standby for car remotes)....HOLY CRAP! It works!!! Then i put in the RTX3060 but can't get display eventhough everything has power now. Not sure what i did next, maybe changed the HDMI cable to the monitor, retest with mini-PC and plug back again.

Now everything finally seems to work, so i move my PC back to my original monitors (i was testing on a workbench with different monitor). Seems to boot up but got beeping sound two time repeatedly. I think i have set my XMP profile wrongly to 3600Mhz, so set it back to 3000Mhz. Restarted and monitor a while, started Wukong, seems fine, wukong is running on my primary display as i type this in secondary display.

Really WTF....stupid CMOS battery dead!!!!!! ranting.gif vmad.gif vmad.gif

(SIDE NOTE: It could also because some capacitor discharge...i have done a 30-40 seconds power button hold, maybe this fix the problem. Either this and/or CMOS battery dead)

Have you tried putting back the so-called dead CMOS battery inside to confirm? I doubt it was the CMOS battery, most probably it was the wrong CMOS settings that could be easily clear using the motherboard jumper to solve the problems you're facing earlier.

Nope. clearing CMOS was one of the first thing i did. Done it several times. Nothing.

Use a multi-tester to test the voltage left with the battery.
