Hi everyone.

My friend has a Lenovo Legion 5 laptop where one of the laptop fans is defective. It basically stopped spinning, but every 3 seconds it will start spinning for like 0.5 seconds with a loud buzzing sound then it will stop spinning again. I found a Reddit thread where another person faced the exact same issue and they were suggesting that the fan bearing is off and should get the fan replaced.

My warranty is over including the extensions so my only option is to get it repaired and/or replace the fan.

I went to Lenovo's official support site, reached out to their live chat and was given a quotation for the fan part and it was almost RM300 just for the fan alone.

Is replacing the fan the only way or what are my other options?

What other options are you looking for?
The only way to fix this is to replace the fan

Take out the fan and look up for the part number
Also, it's best to replace both fans at the same time. The fans are really cheap, usually no more than RM50 a piece if you know where to look

If you're not sure where to look, take a picture of the label on the fans and share it here

What I meant by other options as in buying elsewhere rather than paying almost RM300 through authorised repair provider. Maybe use a different fan like you've mentioned that may cost only RM50 a piece.

Here are some images of the fan, Lenovo named it 'System FAN 81Y6':

I also had a look through AliExpress using the part number and still costs >RM150+.

Doesn't really look the same as the above. May I know also why do you suggest to change both fans?

The original image you provided shows the plastic part on top of the fan, which is why it appears black. Meanwhile, the link I shared shows only the bottom side, which is metal, giving it a silver appearance.

Rest assured, it’s the same fan.

Certain batches of the same laptop model may use fans from different manufacturers. These fans can differ in speed and air pressure, potentially affecting performance.

By replacing both fans, you ensure consistent operation with matched speed and airflow.

Additionally, the remaining fan in your laptop, although still functional, could fail unexpectedly—making it practical to replace both at the same time.

Another option for you:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006688138441.html

Note to consider:
AliExpress shipping is slower than Shopee, and the shipping charges are higher as well.

I had a similar issue with my laptop a while back. If you're feeling handy, replacing the fan yourself could save you some money. I found a replacement online for a fraction of what I’d have paid at the official service center. It’s usually not too hard to open up the laptop and swap out the fan, but just be sure you have the right tools. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, a local repair shop might charge less than what Lenovo quoted you.

This one's part number is 5F10S13917 while my laptop fan's part number is 5F10S13914

Though the shop mentions my laptop's model number correctly, is it compatible?

In addition they're definitely not exactly 100% the same, like the picture from Aliexpress has 1 circle/dot in the center of the fan, while my fan has 3 dots arranged in a triangle in the center of the fan:

If you're that particular about every little detail, just swallow the RM300 cost and buy it directly from Lenovo. Problem solved.
But if you want to save money, then buy from the link I shared and stop being so fussy.

It might not look exactly like the one in your laptop, but it will 100% fit.
I’ve mentioned this before, but here I am repeating myself—Lenovo doesn’t rely on a single supplier. They use multiple sources, even for fans, so expecting every part to be 100% identical is a bit unrealistic.

Open up the "Substitutes" section and you'll see both are listed as compatible as replacements for each other

the difference is basically just different suppliers, eg, one from Delta, another from a different brand
hence, the slight difference in looks
