now pet shop hard to get gerbils, have to wait. once have then just get it.
if you wish to get from pet shop then i try to get from different pet shop, not all from on shop. if you think of wan to breed it. if duwna breed it, get all from one shop will be ok.

Ohiki, do you have gerbil yourself? How many do you have?
I've been searching for gerbil this few days, went to quite a few petshop, but none selling gerbils.  sad.gif
Any other place selling?  icon_question.gif

I think you can get from Silverbolt143.. since he's keeping them as feeder... your act of buying them will save some poor cute fellow  cry.gif

I keep hamster only at the moment. Sad case...  sad.gif

If you want to breed them... buy 1 from pet shop first... then the balance from Silverbolt143 ?

Better think carefully on the taking care part... not just only they are cute... not easy to take care in the long run...  unsure.gif
*
ya, if you plan to breed gerbils, it cost a lot of time to take care and maintain.
if you plan to just keep a pair, then less hassle work.
but then for me i suggest that keep a pair will be ok.
cos if breed, in ethical way, you have to make sure not inbreed.
if wan breed till certain colour, then you need to study on the gene.
this is why last time i just keep them, but then breeding them.

QUOTE(Ken.B @ Feb 28 2011, 10:13 AM)
they don't need wheels???
*
they need wheels, but it depends on the characteristic of each gerbils, some like it, some dont, just like hamsters.
but then they need a special wheel, sort of like sugar glider wheel will be better.
cos if you use those hamster wheel, it will hurt their back bone and body.
and make sure the wheel is not steel wheel with bar, cos scare their tail will caught in between the bar.

QUOTE(silverbolt143 @ Mar 1 2011, 02:49 AM)
Should not be a problem...male/female also got...
But i dont have nice coat collection la...
Mostly black and agouti or nutmeg (i dont really know how to differentiate nutmeg & agouti )....
Only few honey, white & grey coat...

To be frank, I love gerbil as pet  notworthy.gif
Only feed the black coat to my ball python  sweat.gif

Gerbil very territorial, prepare lot of cage if anyone plan to mass breed... icon_rolleyes.gif
*
if next time i wan then i can get form you, but then since you breed for feeder, then i bet mostly is inbreed right?
for nutmeg, young time is like orange colour, but then when adult will turn to brown colour, for agouti, is more the grey white colour.
by the way, you have honey and white, is nice. i didnt manage to own these colour last time.

QUOTE(terces @ Mar 2 2011, 06:02 AM)
I bought mine already heeee.
They are cute, but hard to see if they are male and female cos still too young.
But the shop said is male n female.

The color i got is fine yellow(dont know wht u guys called, honey?) and a nutmeg/agouti.
Anyway i love the nutmeg/agouti more cos he is more tamed and not as naughty as the yellow one.
The yellow one is more proactive.

The 1st day i bring them back, i straight away trained them to feel secure with my hands by feeding them food on my hands.
Now even i dont have foods, they'll climb to my hands whenever my hand was inside the aquarium.

Wanna ask. Sometimes they lick the aquarium, and the nutmeg/agouti even keep licking my hands non stop on 1st day. Is this bcos they want water?
They sometimes(but the yellow gerbil is most of the time) trying to jump  or searching for way out from the aquarium. They keep jumping to aquarium trying to get out. Is this means they dont like the current home(in aquarium)? Or is their normal behavior?

Lastly, a pic of them  wub.gif

ya, from the picture, is very young, so you have take more good care of them, cos without their mom, some very hard to take care, worst come to worst, will get sick and die. for gerbils, is like hamster, sickness hard to notice.
if wan check they are male or female, try to check on how many tits they have. normally male have 2, female got 6, correct me if wrong. thanks.
from the picture hard to determine their colour, and some more is young, so a bit hard.
ya, good, train them become more tame, then you can hold them and play with them.
starting by giving food, then slowly after some time, or in the same period, try to pick them up.
let them smell and lick your finger or hand. so that they can get use to your sense.
if your scare they bite, just blow their head if you feel they wan to bite, but then dont take away your hand.
for easy, when ever your wan to hold them or wat, just rub your hand with the bedding inside.
the used to lick the aquarium or your hand, they just wan to know the sense only.
gerbils consume less water, but even though is less, you have to provide them with water, just hand a water bottle inside the tank.
but then be careful, cos gerbils like to chew, if your dont do some protection on the bottle, eventually they will chew off the water bottle, this happen to mine and most of gerbils owner.
check my post in the 1st page or what in this thread or in previous version, i did some diy wire mesh around my water bottle.
they are jumper, is their behavior, as record, some can jump around 2ft or 2 meters, i forgot already.
so you will see them always jump in the cage, if wan to see them jump more, get a higher tank.
like kelvin said, make sure you close the cage properly. if not, they like scorpion or centipede, is a great escape artist.
hope you enjoy the time with them.

if you wish to DIY habitrail OVO, then be prepare that your habitrail will being chew off by gerbils, cos there got lots of hole and that. since mostly is plastic.
so better use glass tank. more spare to run around play around.

ya, plastic aquarium they wont bite, unless you let them reach the cover, then some how they will bite, if not then will be ok.

for habitrail, a bit hard, cos there got lots of edge here and there, so they can easily reach.
just get a plastic tank or glass tank will be better, 2ft will be wise for a pair of gerbils.

if you wan use the tunnel of habitrail to use as gerbils tunnel, make sure the tunnel are straight, don't put too many of corner.
as gerbils has back bone, so this is precaution to prevent the back bone injured...

I am thinking to get some mongolian gerbil...since they are more active than hamster right? =)

and ouh.would they be great for display???(i will do my research and take care of them like any other pet of mine)
*
the activeness of gerbils compare to hamster is more or less the same.
both is nocturnal animal. so mostly active at night, but then is all based on the characteristic of the animal, some active at night only, some day only, some is active most of the time.

great for display? what exactly is your meaning?
but anyway, gerbils are mammals, so need to pet them and all, so that you can play with them.
if you just leave it there, they will end up being in their world and when u wan to play with them, they will either bite (due to strange, so some other reason), run away, hide, get stress and etc.

most of the info you need is on the 1st page of this thread.
just read and understand it all then you will be ok with it.
if you want to breed them, then you have to read more on breeding, is the whole different story compare you just keep a pair of gerbils.

1st Bold : actually what do i mean display is like putting their cage in my hall room and let my guest(if there is sweat.gif ) see there's a pair of gerbil doing silly thing in their cage.well, they are not just going to be a display,i will love them by giving them treat and such.. smile.gif

2nd bold : well actually,i dont want to get into breeding because once i had done it with hamster..oh dear..what a chaos..they pop out so many and there's inbreeding cry.gif . i was so young and stupid during that day..so i will just take a pair and maybe vasectomy the male(is that cruel? icon_question.gif )
*
if that's is what you mean of display, of course is nice to let other see how they do...
gerbils is quite a curiosity animal, so it is fun to see them dig the bedding/hay, chew the hay, run here and there and etc.
so good, but then make sure you play around with them, pet them,
so that later when u wanna play with them, they will be tame, and not bite you.
same goes to your friends, if they wan to play with the gerbils, then gerbils will be ok with them (human).

icic, that's good, cos once breeding then will be a havoc incident.
if you want, you can be like me, keep 1 pair of same gender gerbils,
i used to keep female in one tank, male in another, if some fight, then either do introduction state,
if not keep separately in different tank.
like my 1st pair of gerbils, both female, i always keep them in one tank, nvr mix with others.
you can get different gender pair, make sure they are different line breed. in case wan to breed.
if not then make sure to neutered either one of them, the male or female.

the current pair i had adopted is different gender pair, but one of them is neutered already.

breeder is hard to find nowadays. u try search for few post before this, there got one breeder, but then mainly breed for feeder.
so if you ok with inbreeding gene then ask from him.
if not then better find other place or even pet shop.
cos inbreed gene gerbils easy to die, sick n etc...

hihi wanna ask , why plastic tank more suitable for gerbils?
Why not cage?
*
need either glass/plastic tank. cannot use cage with bars.
this is because gerbils like to dig and dig and dig...
so when they dig, all the bedding will be all over the place.
if you wan the bedding to be all over the place in your house, then you might do so.
but in the end, cage with bars not suitable.
hope it clear your mind.
