I have this cam, thinking whether should i buy new memory card + charger/bat or just scrap it.
I have 0 knowledge about photography. A quick search says the cam has 20MP. Will this cam take better picture than a older smartphone with 20MP too?

You'll be surprised that very OLD models do not accept 64GB and above due to the format of those newer cards. You'll have to double check the compatibility. As far as I know, anything that's FAT32 should be ok but still better to double check.Regarding will this camera take better pictures than your regular smartphone (midrange - flagship phones) It's not about the megapixels only. It's also sensor size and optical lens quality.
Smartphone main cameras are now quite large vs old digicams. they're near to 1-inch type or at least 1/1.3" in size. That's fairly good for the 24mm equivalent focal length type photography.
The telephoto lens (flagships) are the ones that might lose out due to it not being good a sensor as the digicams that have true optical zoom abilities. THe telephoto lens in the phone is normally fixed 65mm. 85mm or up to 100mm equivalent. it's NOT a zoom lens... this is important as every other zoom in between is either a digital enlargement of the main camera, or a crop of the telephoto lens which might be poorer quality.
The more important thing with this quick search of the ixus 160 is no RAW ability. This greatly hampers any latitude one might want when using a dedicated camera. If just SOOC jpegs are your thing, then no worries.

Can accept SDXC up to 2TB (tested by youtuber) Ya, parent will be using for SOOC only. Sounds ok, i'll get the accessories. Thanks!
