Chief Adviser to the interim government Prof Muhammad Yunus today sought Malaysia’s support in Bangladesh’s bid to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

He sought the support during a meeting with Malaysian High Commissioner Haznah Md Hashim at the State Guest House Jamuna.

Bangladesh can be a bridge between Asean and Saarc, said the chief adviser.

In response, the Malaysian high commissioner stated that Malaysia, which is set to chair Asean next, would convey Yunus’s request to the relevant authorities. She also expressed Malaysia’s willingness to collaborate with the Yunus-led interim government.

“We trust in you. We wish you all the best,” she said.

The chief adviser emphasised Bangladesh’s strong ties with Malaysia and recalled his personal connections with Malaysian leaders, including Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.

“Let’s work together to further strengthen our relationship,” he said.

Yunus also noted that at least seven Malaysian universities have Yunus Centres, promoting his social business ideas and his “three zero concepts.”

During the meeting, Hashim raised concerns about tax issues affecting Malaysian companies in Bangladesh, particularly Robi Axiata, which pays 50 percent of its revenue in taxes.

She highlighted that Malaysian investments in Bangladesh exceed $5 billion, with further interest in sectors like education.

Seems like the big boys G7 2030s vision getting clearer, ASEAN is part of the new world factory with some other new growth engine. Come what may, ASEAN need to do something to stabilize Myanmar or else some super power going to do proxy war there to stabilize them or worse breaking it up to few new country. Bangladesh is just next to Myanmar and India. If Myanmar don't do something, Bangladesh probably going to beat them economically if the strategy is right by 2030s.

170 million ++ population Bangladesh joining ASEAN is an interesting addition. Wonder if India have other geo-political consequences if they join it.

Globalisation will be bigger than the British Empire, "the empire on which the sun never sets" to signify its vastness.

I wander how our new age Globalised Empire will be described as?

We're not the Empire and will never be one, the empire is those G7 gang multiple trillions worth big industry that gonna produce around ASEAN,India,Mexico etc by 2030s. The same gang that explodes China growth in the 2000s-2010s after Bill Clinton gave China shortcut way to become part of WTO in early 2000s.

Yes I know, I'm just curious how historians will describe this new Globalised empire.

Like the Japanese empire: "Land of the Rising Sun".

The Roman Empire: "from the rising to the setting sun".

Interesting development. Are they hedging against India?

More than half of Myanmar is not in Southeast Asia as well as parts of Indonesia and Indo China.

100 million Bengalis in Bangladesh live in very low lying areas.

Whether ASEAN gonna accept Bangladesh, but probably Bangladesh too need to think about their geo-political consequences with India. Since Sri Lanka collapse, some Sri Lankan folks in Reddit think their country already becoming like a vassal state to India, crazy amount of loans coming from Modi gov etc since that year.

Let's say, BRICS have an official currency to play like USD. BRICS will have to create money laundering and tax escape system for the super rich, just lik US and the west created places like Cayman, Singapore,Hong Kong etc combining law and banking loopholes in tons of country. Malaysia should be the brain in creating this system, grab chances to play like Singapore but BRICS version to attract super rich and corrupt rich. There's opportunity in this divided world finance and monetary system Cold War 2.0 era.

Papua new Guinea wanted to join ASEAN since 1990s I think.
Sri Lanka was invited but they declined in 1970s.

ASEAN definitely benefited Vietnam and Cambodia.
