Is this Amex Gold Credit Card issued by Amex or Maybank?!
The newly launched AMEX Gold Credit Card is issued by American Express.

Eh ? i thought we can view all credit card/charge card issued by Amercian Express itself (exclude all those co-branded AMEX) statement via www.amexmalaysia.com.my ? Just that we need to register ourselves at AMEX Malaysia website ? No ?

Isn't Amex operation in M'sia taken over by MBB? This cc should be issued by MBB then.
Maybank Berhad owns the rights to American Express Malaysia. It is more like a franchise operation i guess. While Maybank had paid American Express a sum of money when they took over all American Express business here in Malaysia back in 2006, i believe Maybank Berhad still need to pay American Express a royalty fee every year. Just like those hotel chains such as Hyatt, Hilton and Sheraton which is more common smile.gif

Although Maybank owns the rights to American Express, these two are still considered as separate entities. Any cards issue by Maybank itself will bear the "Maybankard" name while those issued by American Express will only bear the name of American Express.

The monthly statement of the American Express credit card/charge card is also prepared at different places. The Maybank AMEX Classic/Gold credit card and Maybank Ikhwan AMEX Gold/Platinum statements are sent out from Maybank HQ in Kuala Lumpur while the AMEX Personal/Gold/Platinum charge card (and i believe the AMEX Platinum credit card and soon the AMEX Gold credit card too) are sent out from the American Express regional office in Hong Kong.

QUOTE(hye @ Jun 20 2009, 10:49 PM)
Now ... after you get that number, whatever you spend will be converted to MYR based on the bank's forex rate.
Not sure about VISA and Mastercard but for AMEX, let say that you charged HKDxxxx or AUDxxxx to your AMEX, the HKDxxxx/AUDxxxx will first be converted into US$, then only after that they will convert it back to MYR.

QUOTE(winner @ Jun 21 2009, 08:06 AM)
Well, MBB sent me Amex gold charge card last month although I didn't apply for it. At the back of this card, it reads like this: THIS CARD IS ISSUED BY MBB PURSUANT TO A LICENSE FROM AMEX. I believe MBB took over operation of Amex in M'sia by contributing a contract fee and incentive fee to Amex. MBB owns the rights to operate it with the license from Amex.

As mentioned in my previous post, AMEX Malaysia is operating like a franchise. MBB owns the rights to American Express Malaysia with them paying a royalty fee to American Express Limited in USA every year. Maybank didn't merge their own credit card business with AMEX. These two still operate as separate entities.

QUOTE(winner @ Jun 21 2009, 08:06 AM)
With this, I think the monthly statements of all Amex cards in M'sia are sent out directly from Amex office owned by MBB in M'sia, don't need to go through its regional HQ in Hong Kong.

Negative. The statement for all AMEX issued by AMEX itself are prepared and sent out from American Express regional office in Hong Kong.

QUOTE(winner @ Jun 21 2009, 08:06 AM)
Pertaining to overseas transactions, the foreign currency is first converted to USD, before the USD is converted back to RM. In the event that it involves two conversions, the 2.5% commission charge is only applied to the 1st conversion from foreign currency to USD.
You will also lose more in FOREX.

Now that Dozz has successfully got his annual fee for the AMEX Platinum credit card waived. I guess the next to try would be Tinkerbel biggrin.gif

Haha, what if the guy pulls out plat card, swipe but cannot go through. Finally ask the girl to pay first  sweat.gif
Which is why one should have at least one Mastercard and one VISA with them all the time. Bringing a few hundred of Ringgit with them is good too.

Just a few weeks ago when shopping at Speedy i was told that the AMEX terminal is offline and they asked for either Mastercard or VISA. I handed them my only Mastercard (i do not have VISA or a second Mastercard) and was told their machine failed to detect the credit card. OH MY DEAR LORD !!! Then i told them to hold the DVD for me and i'll go to the nearest ATM to withdraw some cash first doh.gif MALU BETUL. There wasn't a girl with me at the time though laugh.gif

Shared limit with other MBB CC! Is that weird?
*
Not quite. If my memory serves me correctly, Tinkerbel said her Platinum AMEX credit card (the white one) is sharing credit line with her other Maybank credit cards.

I am wondering why didn't MBB upgrade these features to their existing MBB AMEX cards (for TP). They rather come out with a new type of card which gives MR. Some users have been using their AMEX for years might not consider to 'port' their cards to this new AMEX due to several reasons.

But frankly this new card features is really tempting...
*
I am actually glad that they didn't. The AMEX card is much better designed. Maybank logo - "Maybankard" printed on all of their credit cards is so ugly.

Damn.. the way U all put it.. make me think I should go ahead and apply for the Amex Gold CC and use it only when I purchase petrol and groceries cause of the 5X points biggrin.gif  Makes sense though.

@guanteik,
The Amex Gold Credit Card is Free For Life and seems to have more benefits tagged to it than the Amex Gold Charge Card.
*
True. After the first 3 years you will have to call in every year just to get the annual fee waived. So troublesome.

Ahehe @MilesAndMore, I was surprise you know ANZ eh  nod.gif ? You must a very well travel person.. haa  notworthy.gif
Well, they do own 24.95% of the AmBank Group smile.gif Still too early to say if ANZ Group will eventually take over AmBank Group in Malaysia and rebrand all AmBank branch to ANZ Bank. Besides, our government still have the stupid 30% maximum foreign investment in local anchor banks doh.gif ANZ however, is confirmed NOT interested to take over RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) business here in Malaysia. May be they figured it is better to wait a few more years biggrin.gif

anyone notice nowadays when we login to check our charge card statement on americanexpress.com.my, it will auto direct us to US AMEX web site and then show " non US card". This is quite troublesome cos sometime we have to type in our login detail twice.

any of you experience the same thing?
*
No. Did not see the "non US card" either.
