I watched a Chinese review of this car. Apparently Mazda engineers did some tuning and tweaks to the way this car drives, so its not just a slap a badge and call it a day exercise

New Electric Mazda EZ-6 To Replace Outgoing Mazda6

It seemed perfectly timed, almost too perfect. Just as Mazda was ceasing production of its long-serving Mazda6 in mid-April 2024, the Hiroshima-based firm was unveiling the rumored Mazda6’s successor — the all-new Mazda EZ-6 sedan concept at the Beijing Motor Show 2024.

Japan’s biggest-selling magazine Best Car reported recently that the sleek-looking model is the de facto successor to the Mazda6 in the Chinese market, and is an front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sedan developed and produced by Changan Mazda, a joint venture between Mazda and Changan Automobile in China.

First launched in 2002, and highly praised for its sharp styling, the Mazda6 (called ‘Atemza’ in Japan) was a popular seller and won multiple awards in Europe and Australia, having also won a place on Car and Driver’s Ten Best List for 2003.

According to Mazda’s CEO Masahiro Moro, who made the announcement at the Chinese show, the EZ-6 will be offered with two powertrains, a fully electric one and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, “so that customers can choose the model which meets their lifestyle needs,” as Moro says. And when he says customers, he means global clients because this model is destined to be offered worldwide. However, exactly when US sales might begin is unclear.

Although full details on the new EZ6 are still sketchy, we have learned that Mazda filed a trademark and design application for the “MAZDA 6e” and the “6e” logo with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on March 18, 2024, and on June 25, it was disclosed that the EZ-6 steering wheel, lights, and exterior-related designs had also been registered.


You may ask why the MAZDA6e trademark and exterior-related designs have been registered in Europe? Simple. We fully expect the EZ-6 to be launched in the European market as the MAZDA6e (or MAZDA6EV).

The EZ-6’s production line rollout in China began on July 16, 2024, and is expected to be launched in the Chinese market in the fall of this year.　

The EZ-6 is a D-segment vehicle and is marginally wider and slightly longer than the Mazda6 it replaces. It sits on Changan Automobile's EPA1 platform of the Chinese-market Deepal SL03 model and the BEV version has a range of approximately 375 miles and a top speed governed at 110 mph to retain battery power for longer.

Given that the Mazda EZ-6 will employ the same platform and almost identical EV powertrain as the Deepal SL03, we can predict that the Mazda will incorporate a 67kWh battery pack and sprint from zero to 60 mph in around 6.2 seconds.

The other option—the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model can travel more than 600 miles on a full tank. Equipped with a Changan gasoline-electric powertrain, the car’s maximum output rates at around 215-hp.

As mentioned above, in addition to the Chinese market, the EZ-6 is expected to be launched in Europe and Southeast Asia by early next year. However, Mazda is still weighing up its options for the North American market penetration and should make a decision by early 2025.
