To all sifus, would want to ask your advice and knowledge regarding Cove Lighting. We recently discovered an infestation of spiders near our cove lightings. I climbed up and discovered that the cove is exposed to the insides of the ceilings as shown in the picture. Logically, insects such as spiders can easily come out from those holes. Am I right to assume that it's not supposed to be done this way? Want to get more opinions before talking to my contractors about this. Cheers! Attached thumbnail(s)

Was wondering whether is this the right way to do it or did my contractor slacked? Cause if it's supposed to be properly sealed, I'll get them to do it.
