Inherited from my father's "classic" collection. He loved this Proton, lots of memories with him and family.

I live in Singapore, only back to JB once/twice a year, take this Proton out for a nostalgic spin.

But it's very difficult to maintain, I went to a few workshops and they just can't get the right parts, have to use old chop shop parts and they don't last long.

Is it still worth it to maintain? Any good shop that could repair it properly?

Appreciate any recommendation, for good old nostalgia's sake. smile.gif

worth is relative, this you need to ask yourself.

if wish to restore once fully, find workshop that can do it, do own research of groups specific to the model.

but if leaving the vehicle for a year without any eyes or maintenance, you may come back just to fix various other issues from just sitting idle.

Klang Valley and maybe other kampung area still have these cars and can source parts or have mechanic familiar with them. JB where got ppl use this car, SGD power means a lot of lalabeng cars in JB, no one wanna use this Saga.

BTW if your car uses Orion engine, good luck to you, even in Klang Valley difficult to find parts. Magma engines still can find parts.

Do you have a proper garage to keep the car?
Since you only will be driving it once or twice a year.

Haha, If I have his money and power, I would be able to restore classic Rolls Royce, custom make the entire engine.  notworthy.gif

I keep my proton pusaka under a roof, with tarpaulin cover.

No money for temperature controlled garage.  sweat.gif

Yeah bro, i know all too well maintaining old cars.
A lot of work and money involved.

Sadly the best solution for your engine spare part problems is to transplant in a newer generation half cut engine where there are still spare parts available.

Mechanical parts still can get. No problem.

Just the body parts (especially internal or upholstery).

U can't stop the car from rusting. Unless u change all the panels, roof, hood & boot 1 shot.

Yes, there are a lot of 1.5L iswara/saga scrap or old ride selling very cheap (Even my accessories shop mechanic also got 1 selling below 5k).
You can transplant over the 12V engine over, but if want to restore in good condition better keep around 3~5k in case of overhauling or any major repair.
Restoring a car is not cheap and mostly due to passion.

My 1993 ISwara Auto was choking like mad for many months. My Mechanic did whatever necessary...tukar spark plugs, plug cables, changed fuses, tuned the Carb, new petrol filter. etc you name it.

Finally when the car mati one day and totally cannot start, the tow truck tarik my car to the mechanic. CHanged to new starter...ok can jalan but still choking. I got so fed up of it until I almost wanted to sell it off cheaply. But before that I thought why not I let a Carb specialist look at it ?

Left my car with him for 7 days. He OVERHAULED the Carb. RM300 only. Quite a complicated job and very few people have the skill and patience to carefully overhaul the entire Carb. I tested the car after that.... OMG.... the car was sooooooooooo powerful!! Best yet....dah la so powerful but also JIMAT petrol!!

If your iSWARA'S CARB HAS NEVER BEEN OVERHAULED.... I strongly recommend you do this. After that you will fall in love with your Iswara again. It is like driving a new car again. You tekan sikit je the car will go without hesitation. I was pleasantly surprised that my mileage per full tank also increased a lot after this.

Photo below was shot after he stripped apart the Carb. After that he cleaned all the parts with petrol carefully and slowly. My Carb was choked with so much dirt and its internals were also no longer tight. AFter he cleaned it...wow!

If u think using a Carb spray cleaner is sufficient, I can assure you that its not good enough cos very little dirt is removed. You have to OVERHAUL it and TOTALY remove all the dirts trapped inside...and no matter how much spray you use also no use.

Now i REALLY fell in love with my Iswara all over again. Never imagined this old car can still make me excited after 31 years. So glad I sent the Carb for a full overhaul instead of selling the car. Now I will never sell the car. The good thing is the Carb wont kacau or cause any issue for the next 20 years.

many of these master mekanik still around in the trade, BUT, they disguise themselves as normal mekanik that just excchange old parts with new.

Reason is simple. Normal joes don't appreciate these time consuming effort. What normal joes are after; FAST turnaround time and CHEAP. This doesn't go well with TIME and EFFORT.

So when you talk to those older gen mekaniks, try delve deeper into the conversation by NOT mentioning fast and cheap service. Thats the reason why in the sharing abbove, it took a week for the carb refurbishment. Had he asked for a fast and cheap job, recond carb it is from the mekanik.

you're a good son. can i ask if your dad is still around.

it's difficult to maintain a car that is not driven regularly.

if you can't drive it often, more problem come when you actually want to drive it.

Arwah means in spirit only. sweat.gif

2010 RIP.

Maybe I can ask my sister in JB to drive it around sometimes, but she prefers driving her Estima to pick up her kids and buy groceries.

Doesn't want to risk it with this classic family treasure, manual gear also, if breaks down on a hot day, marah x abis2 saya kena later. laugh.gif
