I think he meant Epiphones with those Gibson stickers on it. LOL

There really isn't much choice for a good acoustic within your range or 100-300. If you're new into guitar and don't have a lot to spend, you can buy a cheap nylon string classical guitar that shouldn't cost more than rm200. Better guitars cost A LOT more... smile.gif

First you have to make sure, do you want a classical nylon stringed guitar or an a steel string acoustic guitar? What kinds of music you want to play? For 100-300 you can get laminated top acoustic like Yamaha f210, F310(recommended), SX or some Fina models. If you're looking for a classical though, don't bother buying a new one within that range. Stick with your Kapok. I played one too.. until I bought a Yamaha F310.

Did your friend said why not to buy a dreadnought? It's one of the most versatile and popular acoustic shape you know. Maybe he said that because dreadnoughts has steel strings rather than nylon strings on the kapok which is harder to press, especially with cheaper guitars that has a higher action. But frankly everyone who started playing have to get through that.

The f310 package could cost you slightly more than RM400. The guitar alone might be around RM350++. But I've seen shops that mark up the prices to RM450++ shocking.gif I bought the package a few years back in a local Yamaha music shop for RM425. I'm not sure about the stagg though you should go try it. And all steel string guitars have a truss rod that can are used to adjust neck relief.

Its good to ask sufficient questions before u indulge in anything wink.gif

Well, i would say try one which feels most comfortable to ur hand when u hold them.. learn a chord or two before u buy and try them on the guitar.. Does it feel alright and comfortable?

Google the tips on buying acoustic guitar, but dun have to follow their recommended guitars, coz in western country, their low end guitar is our midrange guitar.. lol

u can get a Yamaha F310 for rm350 in Rhapsody Valley n The Guitar Store, maybe it's the display unit that's why, i saw some shops selling it for rm450 blink.gif ... pretty good price for a decent acoustic... a pretty good beginner guitar too haha.... for acoustic, there are a few shapes juz like electric having LPs, strats, teles and etc... there are dreadnought, grand acoustic n etc wit cutaways n non-cutaways n wat not... if ur not goin to do gigs and all, it's better to go for non-cutaways a.k.a full body as they will sound nicer compared to those wit cutaways, but many prefer those wit cutaways due to the better outlook... erm... not all guitars hav truss rods tho.. maybe only those higher priced guitar has it... my acoustic doesn't has it... it's cheap anyway... the ever "famous" pyramid brand lol... kinda regret buying it.. the paint on the fretboard is coming off, bought it when i was still a noob... but, if u start on those cheap cheap guitars which are harder to play, u'll find it easier to play those better ones due to the "training" u "received" from the cheap guitars... yea, in western country, low end guitars are middle range here n middle range guitars in western r high end here... look at taylor, costing 2k in western country but rm6/7 k here sweat.gif

Natchi: yes i do believe the truss rod is adjustable, but do be careful as they might break the neck. U need an allen key for it.

Pathethicsoul: Just check if there is crack anywhere, what gig bag are u using? make sure to get a padded one, coz if u knock ur acoustic hard and leaves a crack its gonna affect the sound.

try the martinez acoustic at rhapsody mid valley too.
I got one and its good for its price (280 i think).
But there's always a pretty large difference in quality between same models of low end acoustics so its best if u have a friend going along with u to help u try it out.

yea, acoustic truss rod are adjusted inside the sound hole whereas electric ones are usually at the headstock...
i don't think there are acoustics without truss rods right? the tension of the springs are very high..

yes, m*h*g*ny. super conjob.

which power chord do you guys usually use? the "small" one or the "big" one?
small one being the 1st and 3rd and big one being the 1st,3rd and the added 5th octave.

i almost never use the big ones nowadays, unless i'm letting it ring or something

m*h*g*ny ?
they rip people off like nobody's business.
and also if you want to take any sort of classes from them, you HAVE to buy something from them first. then they'll pressure you to "upgrade" your equipment to something better.

is it the wood or the strings that affects the volume of an acoustic guitar?..

well thicker strings produce louder sounds. i'm sure wood plays a big part too. wood definitely plays a big part in resonance, sound quality etc

IMO, wood is the biggest component in producing sound.. a wood that dun resonate well cant produce loud volume.. try comparing a cheap acoustic and a mid range one, even if they use the same string, on top of tonal difference, the volume differs greatly..

f210 should be about a hundred less than the f310. I'm not sure what's the differences though, they look the same, maybe different woods or sizes. Yeah it does have a truss rod, like most acoustics.

Just FYI I recently put in a new set of 011 strings in my f310 and it sounds really nice. I used to put in 09s and 010s because I can't take the high tension of higher gauge strings back then and it really doesn't sound as nice. Gotta work out the fingers though, for starters 011-012 are really hard on the fingers.

Something that bugged me of the f-310 is the slim fretboard they have. Apparently it is good for younger people or people with smaller hands. To me it makes it a bit harder to form chords and doing bends. The neck is a slightly V shaped neck(I'm not sure all of them are) that doesn't really suit me as well. It's personal preferences ler you gotta try it out yourself, and remember, any guitars at this price point are going to have some defects. But I gotta say among the budget guitars that I've tried, this one looks, feels and sounds the best.

Anyway, good luck getting your first guitar!
