Why is Spain so damn good in high end sports?

Recently they've just won Euro 2024 and Wimbledon Grand Slam.

They also won FIFA Women's World Cup, Real Madrid: UEFA Champions League, La Liga, etc

They've also won FIFA World Cup, FIBA Basketball World Cup before.

Fernando Alonso is the only driver to win both the F1 World Drivers' Championship and the World Endurance Championship.

Their men's golfer Jon Rahm is currently the World No.1 ranked, 2nd highest paid athlete in the world and he should be able to give Tiger Woods a good run for it's money.



The low end sports aka Olympics but notable achievements:

Badminton Women Singles: Won Olympic Gold and a few World Championships. (MSIA TAKE NOTE)

Men's Climbing: Olympic Gold



Por qué? Lowyat.es? Vamos?

People say Spanish are lazy due to their siesta culture but how come their sports are so successful?

Lol at school ayam tried to play tennis once, but no have appropriate shoes, they kicked me out, so how?

spanish people love sports. they have 2 very high profile sports that became their nation symbol of competitiveness. football and bullfighting. they're the nation of 'macho' as the whole community, even their women too. not just on national level, even their cities held events, each territories trying to 'grab' and explore various sports to define their regions and branding their identities to each different sports. they're like the romans before, trying to claim certain sports for their own regions against the national level. it means a lot to them. it was like in malaysia where if swimming or water involved, you can be sure sarawak to claim that. that's how spain damn successful in sports

Football they got the techniques and discipline while other countries only have one of those qualities. Tennis only nadal and alcaraz other spanish players not as succesful

La Masia academy plays a big part in their talent pool being so deep and non stop churning out players

And not to say their other academies are bad also

So you get the Spanish football team. You can never count them out and always a few years away from spawning a new potentially golden generation

Spain have strong grassroots level for many sports. Football academies sign prospects from an early age and also handle their school education. These same football clubs also run the basketball part. Tennis in Spain is very accessible to most quarters of the public, whereas in many countries the only way to get into tennis is to have your parents be members in some sports/country club or to be enrolled in a school with a tennis program. F1 is an anomaly when it comes to Alonso because his parents sacrificed a lot for his karting career (and Sainz Snr was rich enough to sponsor Sainz Jnr and to get him into the Red Bull program via contacts, so that doesn’t count), but for motorcycle racing Spain also has great local feeder series with lots of sponsorship, which explains the high percentage of Spanish riders in MotoGP. Also, Spanish parenting culture encourages sporting activites, which is probably the most important factor, as long as the kids don’t forget to take their afternoon siesta.

Speaking of tennis, you know how impossible it is to transition from clay to grass. All the greats Federer, Sampras, Agassi all can't do it. But look at Nadal and now freaking Alcaraz! Maybe it's the competition, the rise of Federer portends the rise of Nadal and the rise of Nadal portends the rise of Djokovic and now Alcaraz is rising to be the best ever. Only with strong opponent will you discover your own limit. So, it's the competition that fuels their greatness.
