The melody itself sounds upbeat but the lyrics are bleak and a sense of hopelessness of making one mistake that leads to a downward spiral.



A Taiwanese classic, another song with strangely upbeat melody but with melancholy lyrics for the movie Papa Can You Hear Me Sing. It's about a rescued child in pursuit of stardom abandoned her foster father, and later ended up full of regrets. Any tragic story about char siews mistreating their parents would bring this song to mind.

This one is also achingly melancholic… but many Malaysians may have issues with the subject matter though.

When I was studying in Australia and whenever I felt really down and I missed everyone back home, I would go to the college hall and unlock the piano (a few of us who could play were given a key to the hall so we could play after hours) and in the depth of the night, with nothing but the street lamps outisde, I would play this song, the theme from Schindler’s List.

Damn bro, I’ve heard this song so many times and it wasn’t until you pointed it out, that the lyrics stood out and made sense the way they were supposed to!

This is the same song I posted up there, by Collin Raye. He sings some of the best country songs out there.

I also like the one he sings about him being a recovering drunk in “Little Rock”
