Once Japan’s strongest, Nissan is now weakest.

NISSAN ALMERA = NISSAN SUNNY

If Honda and Nissan merged, would Tan Chong benefit, or would Nissan Malaysia still have poor sales?

Nissan's car manufacturing history dates back to 1914, making it one of Japan’s oldest. Between the ‘60s until the ‘90s, Nissan was Japan’s most technologically advanced. When Toyota and Honda entered the car business in 1936 and 1962 respectively, Nissan was No.1. Today, it’s the weakest in Japan.

The 1966 Nissan R380 that beat a Porsche. Note the Prince badge, more on that later.

It's a sad turn of events for the company that made the first Japanese car fast enough to beat a Porsche – at the 1966 Japanese Grand Prix, two R380s took the top two spots, ahead of three Porsche 906s, thus marking the coming of age of Japanese engineers.

Once Japan’s strongest, Nissan is now weakest. How did it end up like this?

Features on a '70s high-end Nissan Skyline and Cedric, what did the Mercedes-Benz S-Class had then?
In the ‘70s, Japanese market Nissan Cedrics were packed more tech than a W126 Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The 1977 C210 Nissan Skyline, available as a sedan and coupe. Shinichiro Sakurai's work. Packs more tech than many other German cars then. Can be had with a 2.0-litre turbocharged straight-6. Sorry, BMW what?

How did Japan’s automotive industry star get reduced to a company whose CEO fled the country by (reportedly) hiding inside a musical case?

Today, Toyota is No.1 with Honda as its chief rival, which is a reflection of the sad state of affairs at Nissan.

Electronically controlled dampers, 1987 Nissan Cedric. Sorry, Dynamic Chassis what?

Fun fact: Nissan’s founding Aikawa family is related Toyota’s Toyoda family.

Yoshisuke Aikawa was the cousin of Toyota Motor’s founder Kiichiro Toyoda’s wife Hatako Iida, whose family co-founded the Takashimaya departmental.

Kiichiro is the grandfather of current President Akio Toyoda.

Carlos Ghosn is being accused of many things but it’s important to remember that Nissan’s downfall didn’t begin with him. If anything, Ghosn was the most effective leader Nissan ever had, until his ambition got the better of him.

*************************
Yoshikazu Hanawa, Carlos Ghosn’s predecessor who in 1999, agreed with Renault’s Louis Schweitzer to form the Renault-Nissan Alliance once said, “When I was president (in 1996), that company was no more than a target of a merger.”
********************

Hanawa was just yet another Nissan president who had inherited a lame duck of a company and like his predecessors, he couldn’t do much apart from delaying the company’s slow demise.

Nissan was saddled with crippling interest payments on its debts but when the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis came, the company buckled as credit dried up.
***********************

Hanawa with Louis Schweitzer (left) and a young Carlos Ghosn (right)
His predecessor Yoshifumi Tsuji had to clean up the mess left behind by Yutaka Kume, who misread Nissan’s growth in the Bubble Economy period of the late ‘80s as evidence of his good work, when it was just a case of an incoming tide that’s helping even the weakest swimmer get to shore.

His predecessor Takashi Ishihara had foolishly entered a series of deals with European manufacturers, including with Alfa Romeo and buying Spain’s Iberica Motors.

The deal with Alfa Romeo resulted in the Arna, which paired the body of a Nissan Pulsar with Alfa Romeo mechanicals, basically a combination of the worst elements of both companies

*******
Alfa Romeo Arna - Japanese body, Italian mechanicals. Should have been the oppossite, but that's not why it failed. It was no poorer than any Fiat. It was however, the subject of a smear campaign by Euro manufacturers, who saw it as a Japanese Trojan Horse penetrating Europe.

The Iberica Motors deal (now Nissan Motors Iberica) is now being unwind, with the subsidiary’s Barcelona plant in the midst of a very messy closure.

So when did the rot at Nissan started?

Before we can answer that, we need to revisit the origins of Nissan, which actually wasn’t (just) a car manufacturer then.

Yoshisuke Aikawa was born to a wealthy, well-connected family and he founded the Nissan Group as a zaibatsu, a pre-war era equivalent to Korean chaebols. Nissan was involved in not just manufacturing, but also real estate, mining, and chemicals.

DAT's first car in 1914. Aikawa (right) would later buy the company
In short, founder Yoshisuke Aikawa is nothing like Soichiro Honda or Kiichiro Toyoda. He didn’t set out to make the best Japanese car. He was in modern parlance, a mergers and acquisitions guy. He had little interest in cars but knew that cars were becoming a big business and he wanted a slice of the action.

So in 1931 Aikawa bought DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd., which made its first car in 1914. DAT would later be reorganized into Nissan.

After World War 2 ended, Aikawa was forced to leave the business world because of his involvement in the war (but charges against him were dropped) and spent the rest of his life in politics.

Nissan was then led by Katsuji Kawamata, a former banker from the Industrial Bank of Japan (now Mizuho Bank), which is part of the new Nissan keiretsu that was restructured after the old zaibatsu arrangement was dismantled as part of Japan’s post-war settlement with the US.

Katsuji Kawamata, also known as the Emperor of Nissan
Kawamata knew next to nothing about cars or manufacturing and worse still, he had a fragile ego. This is evident by him commissioning a bust sculpture of himself, to be put on display at the entrance of Nissan’s Oppama Plant (no longer there though, thankfully).

However Kawamata did one thing right. He bought two companies – Prince Motor and Aichi Kikai, both were top-class engineering companies and were building war planes before being banned from doing so after World War 2.

1961 Prince Skyline Coupe, designed by Michelotti
Prince Motor traces its roots to Nakajima Aircraft Company, the same company that Subaru’s Fuji Heavy Industry originated from.

Many of Nissan’s legendary nameplates – Silvia, Skyline, Cefiro, Laurel – had its origins traced back to Prince, and most of these cars were developed by Prince’s star engineer Shinichiro Sakurai. He was the father of the original ‘Hako’ Skyline GT-R.

Shinichiro Sakurai, Mr. Skyline
Meanwhile, Aichi Kikai was a specialist in small cars. Like Prince, they too used to make war planes and had engineers that were over-qualified to build cars.

They were the ones who developed the Sunny and Vanette, and the A-series engine that powered them. Even until today, the patents for Nissan’s small capacity HR and MR series engines are attributed to Aichi Kikai, which is now an engine and transmission manufacturer for Nissan.

Cony cars by Aichi Kikai. The Sunny Truck and Cab Van can trace its DNA to these

At around the same time, Nissan also acquired transmission specialist Jatco.

These three acquisitions were responsible for nearly all of Nissan’s successes up until the ‘90s. It also means that most of Nissan’s successes were bought rather than developed in-house.

Nissan's development work was once second to none in Japan. It had a high speed banked as early as the '70s
The engineers who developed Nissan products from the ‘60s to the ‘80s were originally trained by aircraft engineers who built war planes, Shinichiro Sakurai was one of them.

Shinichiro Sakurai introduced Prince's airplane-standard precision engineering to Nissan
They built cars using the same high standards of aeronautical engineering, which explains why Nissan was the most advanced then. However that high level of engineering was not matched by equally forward thinking business leaders.

Back to President Kawamata; Taizo Ishida, Toyota’s President from 1950 – 1961, had very little respect for Kawamata, not because he is a competitor but because of his lack of interest in making Nissan better.

It is well known then that Kawamata had political ambitions and was aiming for a position at Japan’s Keidenren (Japan Business Federation) after his stint at Nissan, which he sees as merely a stepping stone to something bigger.

Nissan's former headquarters at Tokyo's Ginza district. Today it exists as the Nissan Crossing brand experience centre
In fact, Nissan’s then headquarters at Ginza was sometimes referred to as the MITI of Ginza.

“Business world socializing is for people with time on their hands,” opined Ishida on Kawamata’s preoccupation with improving his social standing rather than Nissan’s business.

1966 B10 Datsun Sunny
To show what a fool he was, he was reluctant to signoff the first B10 Sunny project because he believed that making a smaller, cheaper Nissan (Datsun) would affect the more profitable Bluebird’s sales.

1963 Datsun Bluebird (410)
“Buyers who want a cheaper car can buy used Bluebirds,” was his answer. Meanwhile, Toyota was working on the first KE10 Corolla because its own numbers show that Japan’s household income growth will hit a tipping point by 1965 and will experience an explosion in demand for middle class cars. When that happens, Toyota wants to have a car ready for them, and they were right.

1966 KE10 Toyota Corolla
While Toyota’s Executive Vice-President Eiji Toyoda was hassling his chief engineer Tatsuo Hasegawa to increase the Corolla’s engine capacity by 100 cc to upstage the Sunny, Nissan engineers were pulling their hair on how to get their dense boss to understand the urgency of the middle class car Sunny project.

Nissan engineers had to come out with a silly method to get their boss’ attention. Against Kawamata’s orders, they had been secretly working on a prototype and had to figure out how to present it to Kawamata without upsetting his fragile ego.

They came out with a silly method of parking a prototype in the middle of the Yokohama plant hallway and have it lightly covered. When Kawamata came for a visit, they guided their visiting boss to walk past it.

Seeing the partially covered car piqued his interest and he asked what’s underneath the cover, to which the engineers said it’s just an after-hours project for a smaller Nissan. They were lucky that Kawamata liked what he saw and relented, thus begins the Nissan Sunny v Toyota Corolla battle for the next two decades.

When the Nissan Sunny 130Y was king. Remember the absorber bumper feature?

Today, the Sunny is a forgotten nameplate, relegated for use only in China and Vietnam, for a model that we know as the Almera. Toyota Corolla v Nissan Sunny has long since been replaced by Toyota Corolla v Honda Civic.

By 1983, Honda had already surpassed Nissan in terms of revenue and profitability, despite Honda having only half as much experience as Nissan, and engineers who joined Honda were mostly graduates rejected by Toyota and Nissan.

How Honda succeeded anyway is a topic for another day but at the centre of it is of course one slightly unhinged Soichiro Honda and his financier Takeo Fujisawa.

In short, Nissan’s woes can be traced back to its series of errors in promoting poor leadership. How did so many poor leaders ended up steering Nissan is a question nobody could answer. Carlos Ghosn wasn’t the one who put Nissan down this negative spiral. Nissan’s best years, financially speaking, was with Ghosn.

When Ghosn took control of Nissan in 1999 he said, “How could this (the near-bankruptcy) have occurred at one of the crown jewels of Japanese industry?” adding that the Bubble economy of the ‘80s wasn’t to be blamed for Nissan's mess because Toyota and Honda faced the same challenges.

Once Japan’s strongest, Nissan is now weakest. How did it end up like this?

user posted image

“To tell the truth, I never met anyone in Nissan who could give me an exhaustive analysis of what happened to it,” said Ghosn back when he wasn’t viewed as a criminal.

Of course, it’s debatable if Ghosn became too powerful and was prioritizing short-term investors over the company’s long-term product plans.

Closer to home, the fortunes of Tan Chong are intertwined with that of Nissan. When Nissan was at its peak, Nissan was the No.1 selling brand in the country. As Nissan grew weaker, so too did Tan Chong.

Nissan has been underperforming across the region and has since given up on Indonesia. It may not seem like it, but actually Tan Chong is outperforming all other Nissan distributors in the region, but that’s like saying it’s the least leaky of all leaking Nissan ships.

Hopefully the all-new Nissan Almera is the first of many more positive change to come.

The HR15DE is a 1.5 L (1,498 cc) naturally aspirated straight-4 engine. Bore: 78 mm (3.07 in); Stroke 78.4 mm (3.09 in); 16 valve DOHC; EFI with variable valve timing. It produces 74 kW (99 hp; 101 PS) at 6000 rpm and 134.4 N⋅m (99 lbf⋅ft) at 4000 rpm and is fitted to the following vehicles.

Until Now Nissan still use Renault engine?

Standard on all three Nissan Almera Turbo variants is the all-new HR10DET

HR10DET breakdown:

HR - Engine Family
10 - 1.0 Liter Displacement
D - DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshafts)
E - Electronic Port Fuel Injection
T - Turbocharged

1.0 litre 12-Valves Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC), in-line 3-cylinder engine with Turbocharger, a high performance engine that offers an improved response with smoother pull-away, better in-gear acceleration and an output equivalent to a 1.5 litre engine.

The 1.0 litre turbo engine in the all-new Nissan Almera Turbo unleashes a maximum power output of 100PS and high torque of 152Nm (flat torque) at a low 2,400 to 4,000 rpm.

This means that the 1.0 litre turbo engine is able to achieve an early torque kick-in at 2,400rpm, and maintain its maximum torque until 4,000rpm, or more importantly with the constant torque available at an rpm range most operated in daily drives; overtaking has never been easier and less stressful.

Nissan Singapore has these two nice models: Nissan Kicks and Nissan Note.

However, Malaysia does not have them. Currently, Nissan Singapore does not sell the Nissan Almera.

The Nissan dealership in Singapore is also managed by the Tan Chong Motor Group.

The Nissan Almera is an older car model that has not been available for sale through the Singapore distributor Tan Chong Motor Sales Pte Ltd ( Tan Chong Motor Group ) since March 2017.

3) X-trail

Top brand sales:
Volkswagen, Stellantis (go google), Renault, Hyundai, BMW, Toyota, Merc, Ford.... , Nissan is like in the top 25-30 ranking.

Top best selling car in SEA 2023

1) Toyota Hilux
2) Isuzu Dmax
3) Perodua Myvi
4) Honda City
5) Honda HRV
6) Mitusbishi Xpander
7) Ford Ranger
8) Toyota vios
9) Toyota Avanza
10) Perodua Bezza.

Obvious to me, IMO, due to the brands like perodua, ...Toyota holds very strong foothold brand in SEA.
I am surprised....Mitsubishi Xpander?????....maybe in Indonesia?...NOOOO.....Vietnam!.

So, Nissan does not have a competitive edge in the models offering.

a) Serena - high competition from Toyota Avanza, Veloz, Innova (10k cheaper), entirely niche...the engine s-Hybrid (2.6hp) was pfffttt....compare to latest e-Power ( 94hp).
Although the latest Nissan Serena ePower is 1.2 engine, the torque 320Nm, with just 136hp...is able to perform a better people-carrier than the MR20DD 2.0 with 148hp/199Nm. Torque is everything in heavy/larger vehicles..

b) Xtrail - old as fart, since T32 debut in 2013. Only top range Hybrid....

So many proton, perodua, korean, japanese, conti options....NOW, with China.

c) Nissan Leaf?...pffftt.... BYD champs the price.

d) Nissan Navara?...pffttt...Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu ( Indon/Thai champ)....

e) Nissan Almera?... Vios/City and Proton/Perodua options segments...

So, TCM...never had a chance selling in SEA region with their model lines...

1 Alphard/vellfire can buy almost 3-4 serena. different price range.

nissan has the elgrand but that also falls short of the toyota alphard/vellfire. the interior of the nissan is of lower quality.

Mazda tbh drives well, but other than that so so only. The ride so so. The engine is just average and Mazda cars do not age well.

Toyota ride quality and engine is so so much better. While Honda ride quality is not as good as Toyota, its engine is still way better than Mazda.

Mitsubishi has almost nothing to offer here in Malaysia. Besides , their cars are not as fuel efficient as Toyota and Honda.

In some Market (for example Australia), Honda also habis liau.... kalah to China brands rclxms.gif

Many bosses of these japanese brands, not sure what they thinking. Probably too conservative. They got the tech, brand image, motorsport experience, loyal (ex) customers, they sendiri fxck up....
Some even only able to compete in mostly developing countries (for example Mitsubishi). Their EV (plug in) can considered fail already...

Nissan still make up ~5% of total sinkie car population.
https://www.lta.gov.sg/content/dam/ltagov/w...ars_by_make.pdf

In 2023, % of new registration ~4.3% - ~1300 cars. So not many. BYD exceed that ~1500. Biggest still Toyota & Benz.
https://www.lta.gov.sg/content/dam/ltagov/w...ars_by_make.pdf

90% of Sinkie car population are cars from only 3 countries (Germany, Korea & Japan which is still number 1). But sinkie small market.

In the 80s and 90s they were good but by the late 90s they were falling behind in design and technology and were struggling financially

Then in 99 Renault bought half the company. Their next generation of cars in the early 2000s were designed in partnership with Renault and were a lot more modern and a good value but had some reliability issues especially with the jatco cvt

In 1999, Renault acquired a 36.8% stake in Nissan. This significant investment played a crucial role in Nissan's restructuring and recovery during that time.

In 1999, Nissan was facing significant financial difficulties, and Renault's decision to acquire a large stake in Nissan helped stabilize the company and prevent potential bankruptcy.

Without Renault's intervention, Nissan might not have survived the financial crisis it faced at that time.

My 3rd ride b14. Bought used with manual GB. Outstation NS express drive 160km/h no problem. Once reach 150km/h the ride becomes steady at cornering. I believe aerodynamic in work.

Sold it off because my mechanic messaged it up after overhauled. Car become underpowered and fuel guzzler

Redesigned Nissan logo signals a fresh horizon
How the badge's physical identity was adapted for the digital world

In the book, José Muñoz and a computer expert describe the chaotic situation at Nissan's headquarters following Ghosn's arrest.

Previously, the U.S. Department of State had approved the extradition to Japan of Michael Taylor, a former member of the U.S. Special Forces, and his son Peter Taylor, who were arrested in the U.S. for assisting Ghosn's escape.

However, just as the Taylors were about to be placed on a flight to Japan, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in the Boston area ordered a temporary halt to their extradition.

Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican who had been following the case closely, expressed anger at the State Department's decision to extradite the Taylors to Japan, arguing that they would not receive fair treatment there.

Additionally, a few days after Ghosn arrived in Beirut, someone filed a lawsuit against him for having visited Israel, which violated Lebanon's law prohibiting citizens from engaging with Israel (given the tense relationship between Israel and Lebanon).

However, the Lebanese prosecutor recently dismissed the case, stating that Ghosn's visit to Israel occurred 10 years ago.

Both of these developments are good news for Ghosn.

In October 2023, a Lebanese court ruled that Ghosn and his wife must vacate his residence, valued at $19 million, in Achrafieh, Beirut within a month.

The decision was taken four years after Phoinos Investment accused him of "violation of private property" and residing there without legal basis.

Ghosn appealed the verdict, claiming that the company was affiliated with Nissan, and that the property was purchased according to a signed agreement with the latter which granted him the right to live there.

Like a Hollywood movie.

Nissan Sentra 2024 is a very nice car.
TAN CHONG GROUP should bring this model to malaysia

Nissan Sentra 2024 is a very nice car.
TAN CHONG GROUP should bring this model to malaysia

Can fight Camry and Accord.
Eyeing up on this recently. (in Taiwan)
The common complain is weak engine (1.6NA, 135hp)

not really, camry and accord >> sentra

Competitor of Sentra here is Corolla Altis, Mazda 3 and Ford Focus.

2023:

Japan top selling model -484k

1) Note/Note AURA
2) Serena
3) Roox

Number 3 ranking in Japan, after Toyota and Honda. (non Kei-car )

China top selling model - 794k
1) Sylphy
2) Roox
3) Serena

China's top branded car sales:
Tesla, BYD, VW, Haval.... no Japanese. Nissan in China is under Dongfeng Nissan (DFG)
US top selling model - 916k
1) Rogue
2) Sentra
3) Altima

Top 10 brand sales:
Ford, Toyota, Chev, Honda, Nissan (5),  Hyundai, Kia, Jeep , Subaru, GMC,...

Europe top selling model - 361k
1) Qashqai
2) Juke

Too late cos this merger of 1+1+1=1. Padan muka for dragging their feet on EV. Now have to play catchup in EV+BATTERY+SOLAR.

No wonder so many Chinese companies can build EV when a platform/chasis is available.

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the world’s biggest EV battery maker, has launched a new electric vehicle chassis that has safety as its key selling point. According to the company, the new skateboard platform – called “panshi” in Chinese, which translates to “bedrock” – is capable of withstanding a 120 km/h frontal impact without catching fire or exploding.

The company aims to sell the platform to premium car makers seeking to accelerate development and lower costs, Reuters reports. In November, CATL chairman Robin Zeng disclosed the project to the news agency, saying it could slash the cost of developing a new EV from billions of dollars to just USD10 million, essentially making a niche EV firm profitable by selling just 10,000 cars a year.

This, he said, could open the industry to new EV players in economies without established automakers. He added then that CATL had shown the platform to Porsche for a potential luxury EV as well as to investors in the United Arab Emirates eager to start a local EV brand.

The report adds that the chassis is crucial to Zeng’s ambitions to push the Chinese battery giant – which has a global market share of around 37% in EV batteries – to achieve further growth. Besides this, CATL is also looking into micro power grids and is building a battery swapping service.

Tokyo, December 23, 2024 – TOKYO, Japan – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. ("Nissan"), Honda Motor Co., Ltd. ("Honda"), and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation ("Mitsubishi Motors") have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the possibility of Mitsubishi Motors’ participation, involvement, and synergy sharing in relation to the business integration through the establishment of a joint holding company outlined in an MOU signed between Nissan and Honda.

Method of business integration and stock listing
Nissan and Honda, with the result of the consideration, plan to establish, through a joint share transfer, a joint holding company that will be the parent company of both companies. This will be subject to approval at each company's general meeting of shareholders and obtaining necessary approvals from relevant authorities for this business integration, based on the premise that Nissan's turnaround*1 actions are steadily executed. Both Nissan and Honda will be fully owned subsidiaries of the joint holding company*2.

Additionally, the companies plan to continue coexisting and developing the brands held by Honda and Nissan equally.

Shares of the newly established joint holding company under consideration are planned to be newly listed (technical listing) on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (“TSE”). The listing is scheduled for August 2026.

With the listing of the joint holding company, both Nissan and Honda will become wholly owned subsidiaries of the joint holding company and will be scheduled to be delisted from the TSE.

However, shareholders of both companies will continue to be able to trade shares of the joint holding company issued during this share transfer on the TSE.

The listing date of the joint holding company and the delisting date of both Nissan and Honda will be determined in accordance with the regulations of the TSE.

Regarding the organizational structure of the joint holding company, and both companies which will become wholly-owned subsidiaries of the joint holding company after the business integration, the optimal structure for realizing synergies, including the integration of R&D functions, purchasing functions, and manufacturing functions, will be discussed and considered within the integration preparatory committee, with the aim of establishing an organizational structure that enables efficient and highly competitive business operations after the business integration.

“Honda and Nissan are two companies with distinctive strengths.

We are still at the stage of starting our review, and we have not decided on a business integration yet, but in order to find a direction for the possibility of business integration by the end of January 2025, we strive to be the one and only leading company that creates new mobility value through chemical reaction that can only be driven through synthesis of the two teams,” continued Honda’s Director.

Actually, Honda doesn't perform very well compared to Toyota; the sales volume gap is quite large.

Honda doesn't engage in politics either.

Honda's cooperation with Nissan and Mitsubishi is good.

I hope they will have a good outcome on January 31,2025.

"The current situation for Nissan employees is indeed very challenging, especially with the company going through a business integration. While the Nissan brand may still survive, it is likely to be focused on select models, such as the

ALMERA, Nissan Altima, Nissan Rogue (X-Trail in some markets), Nissan Maxima, Nissan Sentra, KICKS, SERENA, NAVARA, NV200, NV300 VAN, GT-R, and Fairlady Z.

Honda, Nissan postpone merger details to mid-Feb

The proposed merger between Honda and Nissan isn’t going quite as smoothly as planned.

Both firms announced on Friday that they will only release details of their plans – originally slated to be revealed at the end of last month – in the middle of February.

According to Kyodo News, the carmakers said they were still discussing the finer points of the merger, having confirmed in a press conference last month they had agreed to begin talks of merging under a holding company in 2026.

Both brands would continue to operate as usual within that same holding company, they added.

Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said then that his company hinged the merger on Nissan – in a financial crisis with only “12 or 14 months to survive,” said a senior official previously – making steady progress in restructuring its business.

Sources close to the matter told the Japanese publication that Honda has been urging Nissan to strengthen its efforts.

To its credit, Nissan did announce in November that it planned to cut 9,000 jobs worldwide and reduce global production capacity by 20%, having seen its net profit fall by more than 90% from April to September.

The sources also said it will offer early retirement programmes to employees at its three US plants and reduce its workforce in Thailand.

But Honda reportedly remains unsatisfied by the said progress and has called for more drastic measures to ensure a successful turnaround.

Meanwhile, Nissan’s (and Renault’s) alliance partner Mitsubishi had also been in talks to join the merger but is now not keen on doing so, as its relatively small size would make it difficult for it to affect management decisions of the joint holding company.

The Three Diamonds company now hopes to explore a collaboration with the merged firms while maintaining its status as a listed company, with a final decision also expected in mid-February or later. The news only adds to the bumpy road Honda and Nissan have already faced – the former has pressured the latter to buy back Renault’s stake in the company, but Nissan’s dwindling resources means it may not be in the position to do so.

In November, Nissan unveiled a plan to shed 9,000 jobs and reduce its global output by 20 percent as part of restructuring efforts.

Many analysts, however, say Nissan cannot survive on its own, and that it may need to form a partnership with other firms such as Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, formally Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.

Espinosa joined Nissan in Mexico in 2003 as a product specialist having previously worked at an automotive research company.

Re:Nissan Update - Nissan plans to transfer production from Oppama Plant to Nissan Motor Kyushu
Re:Nissan Update - Nissan plans to transfer production from Oppama Plant to Nissan Motor Kyushu
To stop production at Oppama plant by the end of FY27

Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa in a suit and tie, wearing an SDG lapel pin, speaks at a podium with two microphones during a Nissan press event announcing.

July 15, 2025

YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced that, as part of its global production restructuring under its recovery plan Re:Nissan, the company plans to transfer and integrate vehicle production at the Oppama Plant, located in the Oppama district, to Nissan Motor Kyushu Co., Ltd in Fukuoka Prefecture.

The company will cease vehicle production at the Oppama plant at the end of fiscal year 2027. Following this, both current and future models scheduled for production at Oppama will be manufactured at Nissan Motor Kyushu.

This decision applies solely to the Oppama plant within the Oppama district. Other facilities and functions in the district—such as the Nissan Research Center, GRANDRIVE, the crash test facility, and Oppama Wharf—will remain unaffected and continue operations as usual.

Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa stated, "Today, Nissan made a tough but necessary decision. It wasn’t easy—for me or for the company—but I believe it’s a vital step toward overcoming our current challenges and building a sustainable future. The Oppama Plant is a proud part of our history, and its legacy will endure.

I want to sincerely thank our employees, the local community, and our partners who have supported this plant with dedication and heart. We will continue to operate in the Oppama area with strong support for the local community, as we carry forward the spirit of Oppama plant and work to restore Nissan’s true value."

Regarding the future utilization of the Oppama plant after production ends, Nissan will explore a wide range of options to determine the most appropriate path forward. Employees currently working at the Oppama plant will remain in their employment until the end of fiscal year 2027.

To address concerns regarding employment and work arrangements beyond that point, the company will establish clear policies, communicate them to affected employees, and initiate discussions with the union promptly once decisions are finalized.

**********

Under Re:Nissan, Nissan aims to reduce its global production capacity from 3.5 million units (excluding China) to 2.5 million units, while maintaining a plant utilization rate of around 100%.

*************

To achieve this, the company has been considering the consolidation of production sites from 17 to 10.

In Japan, Nissan has concluded that transferring and consolidating vehicle production from the Oppama Plant to Nissan Motor Kyushu is the most effective solution, based on production capacity, cost efficiency, and investment potential.

This transfer is expected to significantly reduce manufacturing costs in Japan, strengthen plant competitiveness, improve product profitability, and support Nissan’s long-term growth. The related costs are under assessment and will be disclosed during the upcoming first quarter financial announcement.

Nissan also has announced that production of the NV200, currently consigned to the Nissan Shatai Shonan Plant, will end in fiscal year 2026.

A successor to the NV200 is planned for introduction in fiscal year 2027, with further details to be shared at a later date. The company has earlier confirmed that consignment of the AD model will end in October 2025.

With this decision, Nissan concludes all vehicle production consolidation actions in Japan under the Re:Nissan plan.

About Nissan Oppama Plant:
The Oppama Plant began operations in 1961 and has developed alongside the local community and our partners. To date, it has produced over 17.8 million vehicles, delivering Nissan vehicles worldwide. The plant will continue to produce high-quality vehicles for customers until production concludes at the end of fiscal year 2027.

Address: 1, Natsushima-cho, Yokosuka-shi, Kanagawa
Started operation: October 1961
Land area: 547,606㎡(plant area only)
Number of employees: Approximately 2,400
Current models under production: Note, Note Aura

Major Milestones:

1978: Cumulative production reached 5 million units

2001: Started production of March
2003: Started production of Cube

Yoshikazu Hanawa (1996–2000)

Carlos Ghosn (2000–2017)

The areas of excellence of Renault and Nissan are subtly different and if these are well matched, it can boost the sum of 1 + 1 to 10 or even 20. In this regard, Renault and Nissan must maintain their respective unique traits to produce such synergies.

We have to avoid having 1 + 1 only yield 1. Not only car enthusiasts like myself but also none other than Mr. Hanawa probably would not want to see that result.

In the late 1990s, Nissan was facing one of the worst financial crises in its history. For many years, the company had been losing money due to weak sales, unfocused product planning, and an overly complex business structure. By 1998, Nissan had accumulated more than USD 20 billion in debt, and many analysts believed the company might collapse if nothing changed. Nissan’s cars were considered reliable, but the designs were old, and the company did not have enough cash to invest in new technology or new models.

In 1999, the French carmaker Renault stepped in. Renault agreed to buy a 36.8% stake in Nissan and provided the financial support needed to keep the company alive. In return, Renault gained access to the Japanese market and the chance to cooperate on new vehicle platforms and technologies. This partnership became known as the Renault–Nissan Alliance, one of the most successful automotive alliances in the world at that time.

Renault sent a well-known executive, Carlos Ghosn, to Japan to lead the turnaround. He later became famous for saving Nissan, earning the nickname “Le Cost Killer”.

Ghosn introduced a major reform plan called the Nissan Revival Plan (NRP). The plan was tough, but necessary. It focused on cutting costs, reducing waste, and making the company more efficient.

One of Ghosn’s biggest decisions was to close several factories in Japan that were operating below capacity. This was unusual in Japan’s car industry, where factory closures were rare.

He also reduced the number of suppliers Nissan depended on, reorganized production lines, and pushed for better teamwork between departments. Instead of slow traditional decision-making, Ghosn forced the company to move faster and become more competitive.

Ghosn also changed the product strategy. Nissan started developing modern, attractive, and globally competitive models. Cars like the Nissan X-Trail, March/Micra, 350Z, and later the Qashqai became very successful and helped rebuild Nissan’s reputation. By focusing on strong design and engineering, Nissan regained customer trust.

The results of the reforms were remarkable. By 2001 — just two years after Renault’s investment — Nissan returned to profit, surprising many in the global car industry. The company paid off much of its debt and became financially stable again.

The Renault–Nissan Alliance started sharing technology, engines, and platforms, which lowered costs for both companies. In the following years, Nissan became one of the leaders in electric vehicles, launching the Nissan Leaf, which became the world’s best-selling electric car for a long time.

In summary, Nissan was indeed rescued by Renault in 1999. Through financial support, bold restructuring, and strong leadership from Carlos Ghosn, Nissan transformed from a company close to bankruptcy into a profitable and innovative global automaker.

This rescue is often considered one of the most successful corporate turnarounds in automotive history.

If no renault, nissan probably no more at 1999 !!!

Sad to say, majority of Malaysian still skeptical about hybrids until today i only seen 1 on the road at my working place. Nissan Malaysia is too slow introducing new model and pricing wise also not aggressive to win over new customers. The e-Power concept is not a bad 1, it is a motor generator
+ EV drivetrain which help solve the long waiting time for normal EV. Suitable for people who is always on the go and dont like to wait for charging.
