I'm not sure if this the correct forum, but I get the feeling that renovation contractors are now charging double or triple.

In 2021, I contracted someone to perform toilet water proofing for me. Two small toilets and I was charged RM1900.

One of the two toilets have leaked, hence I decided to approach others.

One foreigner quoted me RM2,500 for one 8*5 feet toilet while the local quoted me RM3,500.

How is it possible that this is now so expensive? The cheapest quote is 3 times what I paid in 2021.

Question: Has renovation cost increased dramatically? If so, why?

Do u expect your salary to be increased every year? If yes, the company who pays your salary has to pass these incremental costs to the customers. Same goes to raw materials, labour costs, steel price etc.

If you are happy with no salary adjustmnent, then is all good. Company can maintain the same amount to be charged to customers wink.gif

Well, we cant assume thing is multiple times more expensive due to normal increment.. salary increment at best 5-10% per year..
Seems like profiteering.

yes of course combination of profits + inflation. u don’t want to do business that is loss-making.

That’s why always good to compare prices. In procurement, general practice is to obtain at minimum 3 price quotation. If all parties quoted about the same price, then that is the market price at that point of time.

The 30% price hike in construction materials costs is not justified (konon nya due to diesel subsidy removal). The players in the market are trying to set a new benchmark but it remains to be seen whether the market will accept. Keep asking around. If you take it, then the players will say this is now the new market rate.

I did waterproofing for my small condo toilet more than 10 years ago and paid RM1,500. That was in a cheap condo in Kepong. The problem you have is that your previous job was cheap and the quality reflect the cheap price needing you to do it again. Why not try Epoxy? It will be much cheaper.

2021 1 rice meal at the mamak consisting of 1 piece of chicken and 1 portion of veggies is between RM6-7.

2024 its already RM9-10. That's approximately 50% hike.

So do your math, its the same across most sectors including construction and renovation.

Private contractor now didn't get subsidized diesel. The extra cost passed down to you.

Your 2021 contractor has failed, probably was not qualified to carry out water proofing work. hence, was cheap.
