learnt 3ds max by myself as a hobby (and a dream of making movie?lol)
for around 9 months during my free time after work (i learnt the basic of 3ds max via the internet few years back and now picking it up again tongue.gif).
designed & made my own gundam while learning through youtube and google.

well, i think the below is the best i can do now with the knowledge i have currently.

Wow.. Thats very nice..
care to share wireframe, interesting..  how long it takes you to build?
*
wireframe? have to go back to my house and screen shot from my pc, i think around 40,000++ polys with turbo smooth for some rounded part, if remove those around 34,000++ polys

coz i learn during my free time, and design at the same time, so around 3-4 months for this project? with around 2-3 hours per day whenever i off work tongue.gif

for each shot, it needs to run around 30 min+, so now i headache with how to proceed to animation with 24fps if i want to do it as i learning how to animate it

and now try to learn how to use photoshop for some effect in those cg like photo (darn, photoshop is much harder compared to 3ds max)

Looking good for a hobbyist, wanna go fulltime? XD
fulltime? have an IT job at hand, can only go part time with my hobby now, in hope one day can make my own animation just by watching tutorial online and learn from it... laugh.gif

and hope that someday, someone will notice and maybe (MAYBE!) give me a chance to make an animation movie? sort of...hahahahahahaha

Hi, There..
Thats awesome...  thats kind of clean.. for 40k, but it will be heavy to animate..
Thanks for sharing. personally I work as a visualizer too.. : ) but on Retail ID, uses Max, PS, Acad as B&B tools.
personally i think if you are really keen on character animation... may want to join Maya.
IIRC Max is reaching its EOF cycle with ADSK  (please pardon me if its not) as there will not be much new feature upcoming.. focus seems to be on Maya nowadays.

HTH.. keep learning!
*
yea, i know when i try to move the view, the fps dropped from 130+ to 20+, next model will try to reduce the poly counts so that i can start on learning some animation

for 3ds max and maya issue, i heard that maya is more suitable for animation, but i did the switch sometime around june, i got alienated, and dont feel like start from A all over again, so continue with 3ds max tongue.gif

after all i try to brush up my skill first (at least reach the stage for animation) then maybe will try to test out maya

OK, its a choice thingy... but just share currently all new feature in Max are borrowed from Maya.. and is always half cooked.. haaaa.. you tried on the new slate materials interface? while its good for something.. i find it waste of time if you are doing multi mat alot..

they are very different in controlling animation.. ill suggest if eventually you really want to reach there.. ill really suggest you bite on...you may have to start all over after all.. but one thing is that you will have the concept foundation (terminology) which is good..

Hardware wise.. I am currently on Quaddro 3800, mid-high card on top end HP elite workstation.. unless u are looking at CUDA, personally finding Quaddro might not worth the $ anymore... its more for screen interface..
As most of the driver for DX is equally good now..  due to gaming tech, DX may become main stream and replace...

my 2 cents..

cheers!

haha, thx for ur advice, the new slate materials interface, i tried, but hard to manage, i go back to the traditional one tongue.gif

yea, someday i will have to go to maya and try it out, but since my 3ds max has some plugin in it (primarily the vray), and also all my tutorials are 3ds max , i lazy to make the jump, but someday i will try out maya tongue.gif

hardware wise, my laptop is just only dv6 6001tx, which is i7...that's all, dont have a deep understanding of the hardware dept.

Very good for a first 3ds max animation, will be even better if you show the actual transformation, maybe using Morph. Add sun rays too

great stuff!
*
thx! sorry i dont get u for the second part, morph? i thought morph is for organic movement such as facial expression etc? the technique i used is reaction control for transformation. For the lighting, i still not familiar with it, maybe i'll search for tutorial on line, but i dont think sun ray works in space? i don't know, i don't have much knowledge in 3d, sorry if i'm wrong notworthy.gif

btw, this is toon render effect, i designed this to have cartoonish look.
