The fourth season of The Boys is being reviewed-bombed for its writing and political messages…

Amazon Prime Video’s satirical superhero series, The Boys, recently released the first three episodes of its long-awaited fourth season, with news that a fifth and final season is already in the works.

In the fourth season Billy Butcher and his team are doing what they do best, taking the fight to the corrupt superhero organisation Vought and getting into plenty of scrapes along the way.

While the show, up to now, has felt like more of the same it seems like some fans are slowly turning away from its messaging, leading to review bombs on Rotten Tomatoes.

So far, The Boys: Season 4 is sitting at a not-so-great score of 52%, the lowest it’s ever been, whereas the critic score remains high with 95%.

Why’s the audience score so low? Well taking a look at the reviews left it seems the writing is the biggest source of controversy.

One 1-star review read: “Just awful. If you like the boys don’t watch it.”

Another added that the “quality of the show has gone downhill ever since the first season” and they sometimes “can't even believe this is the same thing I started watching 3 seasons ago.”

One particularly scathing review read: “The writing has seriously gone downhill. Some of the dialog is so cringe I have to pause and take a minute to uncringe.”

The usual claims of the show going woke have been tossed around, as well as criticism against Erin Moriarty’s character Starlight.

Whether the show can win back some fans with the next few episodes remains to be seen, but then again it seems like the vast majority are enjoying the show, political messaging and all.

The Boys season 4's first three episodes came out on Prime Video on July 13, 2024. As the fourth season came out during Pride month and after the first three episodes, some fans have been calling the show "woke". The show has been renewed for a fifth season, which will be the final one.

Frenchie, a prominent character in the show, played by Tomer Capone, has a male love interest in season 4, and thus some viewers complained about the show's woke status.A viewer tweeted:

I think he was bisexual from the beginning. I thought in earlier season, it was implied that he was in a relationship with a couple?

Still pissed at the ending of season 3. Butcher could have ended homelander there and there. I don't care what promise he made. What he did basically erase the whole point of season 3. Obviously the script writer did it so that they can drag for another season, but damn!

Another show that started out with a bang and went to shit thanks to THE MESSAGE, alongside such greats like HBO's Westworld and Altered Carbon.

They can’t kill homelander until the last season. He’s the main bad guy that everyone hate but taking him out will mean the story ends

The show has always been satire and it’s about making fun of everyone. The message? Woke is it? It’s about making fun of wokeism too including those who push everything they hate as wokeism. The inclusion of gay stuff is to trigge those people and it looks like it worked. The creator even said the show was always about making fun of the audience.
