Hye all..

I was cleaning my late father's stuff at his kampung the other day and found a whole jar of coins. But some.of the coins are RM1 and also 1 sen coins.

The coins exchange machines at banks don't accept RM1 coins.and 1 sen coins right? So can we exchange it over the counter? Do we have to count it beforehand?

Appreicate if any of you have any experience of.this and can share it. Thanks.

https://www.bnm.gov.my/-/clarification-on-rm-1-coin

Bank Negara Malaysia would like to reiterate that the RM1 coins remains legal tender until 6 December 2005. All businesses must continue to accept the RM1 coins and the public can exchange their RM1 coins during the three months period of 7 September to 6 December 2005.

6. Is the 1 sen coin still legal tender?

However, members of the public may exchange their 1 sen coins, at no charge at Bank Negara Malaysia's head office in Kuala Lumpur and its branches in Pulau Pinang, Kuala Terengganu, Johor Bahru, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

TS may find this website interesting. Those coins could be worth more than face value:

just sharing the experience with kocek

8 march 2025 (saturday )- didnt do any appointment, go subang parade around 2pm, the staff is friendly. Help count the coin with the coin machine, but she reject some old looking / unusable coin , then i have to open MyPay app to do all the admin work while she teach me, the whole process took 20 minute depending how much coin u have , told me 3 - 4 day working day to see the amount in the bank

10 March 2025 to 13 March 2025 - didnt see the amount bank in yet, so i sent email enquire at 13 March 2025 when the amount will bank in, the email reply assured that they will follow up because it is under process of bank pending approval

14 March 2025 ( friday ) - finally see the amount at around 7pm ish.

Time estimation : 6 days

experience : 4.5/5 , okay normal

advice : recommend to do appointment

ayam sad the amount not even 500.

I did mine recently at Maybank HQ. Just need to fill in a form and they will help submit to BNM. Was told it will take months before the money gets credited into your account.
