Long as you have Ericsson as the sole 5G vendor, don't expect it will improve any time soon at least in the next few years

Indoor coverage may vary in floors. In LG/basement parking sure need drop to 4g. (The disadvantage of smaller telco like Yes, unifi, they can be somehow weaker 4g signal)

As for MRT, they got 5g line in MRT. But that's different story for LRT kelana Jaya line which smaller telco didn't bother to do at all as well.

Well, you are referring to maxis share sale agreement .. It has nothing to do with the 5G DWN, so the Huawei as the vendor for the 5G DWN not even sure if they will be selected, hopefully yes

News on 2 June, that is the expected timeline, yes all telcos need to sign it by then which in fact change multiple times already.

That's still no exact timeline yet. So depends on whether you really need a new phone or not. For now I'll definitely get 5g phone that supports current 5g network first (that officially available in Malaysia, not imported). All of 5g ready phones since 2020 should have support for SA network and NSA network. Therefore that's no need to wait for second network.

The answer is, if you need to buy a new phone now, just get a 5g capable phone. Nobody knows how many years more to wait for second 5g nationwide.
It is not necessary to buy a new phone just for the sake of using 5g.

My next phone will definitely be 5G-capable

Yeah, 2020 phones with 5g just theoretically support NSA+SA. Phone updates might have been terminated for such models like s20 series after go pass 3-4 years support lifecycle. So possibly will need to be replaced eventually.

Remember when very first batch of LTE devices from 2014-2017 were not able to take VoLte support as manufacturers ended software update support lifecycle, those eventually forced to be replaced due to 3g sunset

I believe we won't see 5g SA to be widely use in Malaysia yet. Maybe for industry use cases only. The most important thing now is for MCMC, NDB and telcos to work on improving indoor coverage.

Verizon USA has low-band 5G frequencies, ie 850MHz, 1700MHz, 2100MHz and 1900MHz for both NSA 5G LTE anchor freq and for consumer use, which give good indoor coverage, ... whereas DNB has only the low-band 4G LTE 700MHz frequency for NSA 5G anchor and none for consumer use, ie DNB has only mid-band 5G frequencies, ie 3500MHz or 3.5GHz, for consumer use, which gives poor indoor coverage.

So, in Malaysia, better to stick to 4G. Eg, .......

T-Mobile USA has already launched 5G SA for general consumer use since 2020 for it's low to mid to high band 5G frequencies. It's low-band freq are 600MHz, 1900MHz and 2500MHz, which give good indoor coverage. .......

AFAIK, iIf you buy one of the above DNB-approved 5G smartphone today, it's firmware is only 5G NSA capable and compatible with DNB's 5G technology, not yet 5G SA capable. If 2 or 3 years later, DNB1 or DNB2 launches 5G SA to replace 5G NSA, your then 2-3 years old 5G smartphone will need to be able to be updated/upgraded over-the-air by the OEM (eg by Samsung or Apple) for 5G SA capability.

Note also that every country often requires different 5G firmware for it's 5G smartphones, eg in general, you can't use a 5G smartphone bought in China, in Malaysia or in another country.

We can only hope that the second network is 5G SA.

For people who care about using 5g SA in few years to come, they would just buy a new phone again. People who use their phone for as long as it can last probably won't care about 5G SA, because current 5G NSA is more than sufficient.

For deep inside shopping malls+basement-carparks, office buildings and underground MRT, Singtel has probably deployed low-powered 5G SA signal repeaters or boosters, eg at every 100m - low-powered repeaters to minimize radio interference to the main high-powered 5G SA cell towers that have a range of >1km or 1,000m.

Not surprising for Singapore. Malaysia telcos do it by demand in urban areas, hence our 4g still sucks after more than 10 years. Just wait and see how gov will regulate the second network later.

Some my friends using 5G compatible devices saying coverage not maximum yet... Always dropped to 4G...

I don't really sure what's it's mean... I cannot test because no 5G compatible devices 😋

Last time I hopped on MRT (early July), there is zero 5G signal underground

It took more than 5 years since the 4G first launched in Malaysia to cover the Kelana Jaya LRT line. The MRT line was an exception because it was newly built back then so it equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Hopefully it wouldn't take so long for 5G, it is almost 3 years since 5G commercially available on YTL Yes
