Hi everyone, abit of a noobie here...

I'm currently fixated on a used 2016 BMW 120i M-Sport with around 85k mileage. Condition seems good, tested and drove well & smooth, power was also pretty strong with the 1.6 turbo.

However, HUGE concerns on the future of the car. Hope some sifus here is able to address some of the below!

1. what are the maintenance for a used BMW of this age? Any particular parts to look our for?
2. Saw advise to change all fluids and hoses upon getting a used BMW car, is this a good way to ensure no sudden breakdowns?
3. Turbo problems - read some forums pertaining to coolant leaks that causes the turbo to fail, is this something i can perform preventive maintenance on? Like cover this during regular service, etc
4. Would you suggest third party insurance providers? The dealer suggested Warranty Smart for such used cars that are out of warrant, anyone have experience with these warranty providers?

New potential BMW owner here and any help is much appreciated!

I see... currently earning ~15k per month, but from the tone of it, seems like maintenance is gonna cost a huge chunk...

Just go find those BMW specialists workshop and ask for their advice.

No matter if it's current used market value is 50k, 100k it is still a car that was 200, 300k brand new. So that means the spare part prices would reflect the actual price brand new.

However BMW owners can tell you if you use original parts or upmarket quality parts, it would last quite long.

It use N13 1.6L Prince Peugeot engine and further tailored by BMW

177hp/250Nm, 5.9L per 100km, pretty fuel efficient like a Honda City

Common issues with this engine:-
-valve cover oil leaks (quite common),
-water pump issues
-coolant leaks,
-vacuum pump failure (quite common)
-turbocharger wastegate rattle

The above issues is more less like my car (N20 engine) but it's still a reliable unit, no major headache maintained so far

I suggest you to set a side RM15,000~RM20,000 for emergency / maintenance on this BMW, put it on FD or any in monthly tenure. Better to have allocated fund or else buy a Japanese car...but nahh my Honda City had more issues compared with my 5 Series. Putang ina

Most frequent issues I've heard from mechanics for N13 Engine are gasket oil leak & Turbocharger/rattling issues

Gasket leak, straight replace the affected gasket & check throughly including Oil Sump gasket too.

Turbocharger, depends :- repair back again if possible, or bought a reconditioned unit (cheaper) or buy a new Turbocharger unit
