Google up Minamata Bay disaster in Japan. So far that is the only major case of mercury poisoning due to bioaccumulation in seafood.

This leads to mercury poisoning to be known as Minamata disease btw.

The major cause of this incident was due to heavy dumping of toxic chemical wastes containing mercury from nearby factories into the ocean.

Not surprising since this incident happened back in 60’s and there were no internet back then. You can only come across this issue if you watched a lot of documentaries.

I only knew about this stuff because I had disaster management subject in university. Really mind-opening and skewed my view about Japs since they’re the ones behind the Bukit Merah rare earth case too.
