Yes it's very cold, by Malaysia's standard of course. Skinny people might need full winter gear, those big sized still can live with long johns and thick jacketÂ
If you plan to board the Shinkansen (even once!), do get the JR Pass. More than worth it, so much that they limit the purchase only for foreign traveler, nihonjins droolingÂ

the most extreme weather i ever encountered was winter in Melbourne & late autumn in Germany...
I got more natural protection (i am fat

) ... so i guess will bring winter jacket, gloves, wool hat & long johns then
i will be going for 5D5N (excluding travel time)... landing in Kansai AP and returning from Narita AP
definitely will get the JR pass since will be used for the Shinkansen (Osaka -> Kyoto -> Tokyo) & Tokyo city traveling (~RM1156 for 7 day normal pass)
For Osaka... will buy the Osaka Unlimited Pass since allow unlimited subway rides & free entrance to most tourist sites.. For Kyoto... will buy the Kyoto Sightseeing Two Day Pass Card... alot of damage here becoz of temple entrance fee :S
for train/subway schedules.. can go here to plan ->
