I want 2 buy my first DSLR, my sis will come back from japan. I had 2 options in my head, either Olympus E-510 or Canon 40D. I love 2 snap on motorsports, weddings, and nightscene pictures as well as building. [need Live View]

My friend own an E-510 and i like the user friendly butons & menu, and the setting is at the "front" and no needs to go too deep to change the wb, iso, apperture and etc..

My Question:

1. So.. if i buy Canon 40D with 18-55 IS lense.. should it be better than E-510 double Lense + Lense 70 - 300?
2. Why the price EF - S18 - 55mm F3.5 - 5.6 IS & EF - S17 - 85mm F4 - 5.6 IS USM are so different? What the pro's and con's?
3. IS from Canon are at their lenses, and Olympus put their IS on the body itself, what the pro's & con's?

like what hellfire said, its two different class, but since you're making a comparison, and since its your 1st camera, and assuming that you have the budget... i'd say go for the 40D smile.gif no offense to oly users though. The main reason is that you can expand your shooting in the future, battery grips, more 3rd party option... etc.

answers:

#1. Its better for only 1 thing, the camera body. Don't know about the lens though, its not as good as oly's kit lens, but that should not be a problem, you are to learn to make good use of the things you own 1st.

#2. EF - S18 - 55mm F3.5 - 5.6 IS & EF - S17 - 85mm F4 - 5.6 IS USM. The difference is pretty obvious. EF - S18 - 55mm F3.5 - 5.6 IS has a shorter zoom range than the EF - S17 - 85mm F4 - 5.6 IS USM. Both have IS. But the EF - S17 - 85mm F4 - 5.6 IS USM has USM = Ultra Sonic Motor, where u can focus faster and more silent. The EF - S17 - 85mm F4 - 5.6 IS USM is definite winner on this side.

#3. Pros and Cons, Canon only have IS on their lens, thus most of their lens are a bit expensive(refering to the L range). Pros are most canon IS lens are good quality, cons are you have to have a steady hand to make each shot during lower shutter speeds.

Its about vice versa for the E510. Except that oly's Zuiko Digital lens are expensive for those High Grade and Super High Grade range. And having IS built into the body, lens by oly are lighter, thus easy carrying. Oly's HG and SHG lens are meant to be expensive, because its dust prove and splash prove(like canon's L range lens).

The con for E510 is that you don have good dynamic range on its sensor... and its not on par with the 40D, totally different league.

four third naturally has more DOF due to its image sensor design. lack of oopmh for portrait shots, but great for landscapes.

lanun8... if you have not invested in any lens system.. why not the nikon D300.. slightly more expensive... but beat 40d in almost every aspect...

b.t.w. a canon fan myself.. but will wait for a 5d or its replacement..

Note that the E-510 has only 3 AF points. Don't know if it's enough for you if you're really into action shots. Other than that, the E-510 should be a really fine DSLR to get started with. The kit lenses are very worth your money - sharp.

i think for nowadays availability and all, buying common brand is good with the accessories

i like canon for having so many option, but like nikon body for its ergonomics
i think nikon didnt offer so many just for the sake of quality control and focusing to some targeted product

Get the 40D with EFS17-85 IS USM. Come back to Malaysia, and sell the EFS17-85 for me as RM1 to 1.1k. notworthy.gif

definitely canon if you're into sports photography. anyway, canon is the clear winner between the two. better built quality, twice the FPS, more lens to choose from, the ability to take full control of it via a pc and etc. i cant see any reason why you would not choose the 40d over e-510.

lens IS is always better than sensor IS. cos the IS is optimized for that particular focal length whereas sensor IS don't work well when using longer focal lengths. furthermore, with the lens IS, you can see the IS working tru the viewfinder thus having a better chance to compose a good pic.

i dont think that the weight would be much of a factor as you'd definitely get used to it as you would have a lot of bragging rights lugging it around. (its a 40D! not a D40!)

only choose the e-510 if you are traveling round the world in 80 days or have tons of OM lenses (with an adapter too).

I have used all three brands - Olympus, Nikon, and now Canon. ALL THREE take great pictures. A body is a body, you may want to pay more attention to the LENS that you buy. And you may have missed the Pentax K10D (cheap and very good) - EISA European Camera of the Year 2007-2008 plus Camera of the Year award by many foreign magazines - wonder why?

Olympus

1. Light, small (except their pro model) - body and lens
2. Being four/thirds system, many will appreciate their 2x crop factor (100mm becomes 200mm)
3. Lenses are generally cheaper than Canon/Nikon
4. Olympus is a very innovative company, as seen by their past photographic achievements (eg. first to introduce LiveView)
5. Better sensor cleaning system compared to Canon/Nikon

but.....

1. Its harder to buy/sell used Olympus bodies/lenses over here in Malaysia. People lean too much towards Canon or Nikon, hence the availability of many used Canon/Nikon items.
2. The 2x crop factor is bad for fans of wide angle shots

Canon

1. Generally, superior ISO performance (until Nikon introduced their D300/D3) - better for action shots (the 40D's 6.5 frames per second beats everybody else in its class)
2. Basic kit lens not optically great, but hey, Canon has those L lenses!
3. Cheapest fullframe camera (the 5D) in cameraland! Only company to have a few fullframe cameras in their line-up (again until Nikon introduced the D3)
4. Once more - some people switch to Canon just so they can buy a L lens!

but.....

1. Canon now has serious competition in the ISO game
2. L lenses are expensive

Nikon

1. Many prefer the colors produced by Nikon cameras compared to Canon (this is of course debatable, Canons tend to produce colors more true to the actual scene, that is sometimes interpreted as being a little dull or flat)
2. Lenses are slightly cheaper than Nikon (across the range)
3. Nikon now has the very impressive D300 and D3 - but don't forget the D300 body is almost rm2000 more than a 40d body, and it is NOT SUPERIOR in every way to the 40D, as mistakenly pointed out by someone earlier
4. Nikon has the very versatile 18-200 VR lens, a lens that Canon does not have (or rather, does not want to make)
5. NASA uses Nikons on all their space shuttles (they recenty purchased 76 Nikon D2Xs)!

but.....

1. D300 (and the D3) are expensive (the Canon 40D is selling cheaper now than when the 30D was introduced 18 months ago)
